لاdo not تَقبَلواaccept قَولَthe words of الوُشاةِthe slanderers فَإِنَّهُمfor indeed they
كانواthey were لَناto us فيin حُبِّكُمlove for you أَعداءَenemies
Do not accept the slanderers' words, for they
Do not accept the words of slanderers, for they
were our enemies in our love for you.
Were enemies to us in their love of you.
جاءَتcame خَواطِرُكُمyour thoughts إِلَيَّto me فَجاءَهاthen he came to them
بِالإِفكِwith falsehood فَاِنصَرَفَتso they departed بِهِwith it إِذwhen جاءَhe came
Your thoughts came to me; then he came to them
Your thoughts came to me, so slander came to meet them
with falsehood, so they departed with it when he came.
And turned them back corrupted when they came.
هُوَhe فيin الفُؤادِthe heart إذاwhen دناhe drew near وتناءىand went far away
ومناهُand his wishes أحسنَhe acted kindly أوor إليَّtoward me أساءَhe did harm
He is in my heart, whether he draws near or goes far away,
He is in my heart when he draws near and turns aside,
and his wishes too, whether he treats me kindly or ill.
Whether he is good to me or does me wrong.
وإذاand when جرىflowed فيهabout him الحَديثُthe talk جَرىflowed لَهُfor him
دَمعيmy tears فَيَنقَلِبُso it turns into الحَديثُthe talk بُكاءَweeping
And when talk turns to him, there flow for him
When discourse runs in it, my tears run to join it,
my tears; so the talk turns into weeping.
So that the discourse is turned into weeping.
قالواthey said بِقَلبِكَin your heart مِنهُof him شَيءٌsomething قَلتُI said لاno
بَلrather إِنَّindeed فيهِin it لَعَمرُكُمby your lives أَشياءَthings
They said, 'Something of him is in your heart.' I said, 'No—
They said, "Your heart is somewhat inclined to him." I said, "Nay,
rather, by your lives, there are many things in it.'
Indeed, there are many things in it, by your life."
يَقَعُfalls العِقابُthe punishment لِغَيرِfor no ذَنبٍoffense مِنهُمُfrom them
وَلَرُبَّماand sometimes وَقَعَfell العِقابُthe punishment جَزاءَas recompense
Punishment comes from them for no offense,
Punishment falls for no crime of theirs.
and sometimes punishment comes as recompense.
And punishment sometimes falls as a reward.
وَحَديثُand the talk of نَفسيmy soul بِالعِتابِof reproach شَجاعَةٌboldness
فَحَصِرتُso I was tongue-tied عَنfrom بَثِّvoicing العِتابِthe reproach حَياءَout of shyness
And my inward talk of reproach is boldness;
My soul's discourse in reproach is courage.
yet shyness kept me from voicing reproach.
So I held back from voicing reproach through modesty.
ممّاamong what مُناناour wishes أَنthat تَعيشواyou live بَعدَناafter us
ياO غادِرينَfaithless ones وَأَنand that نَموتَwe die وَفاءَin faithfulness
Among our wishes is that you outlive us,
How excellent that you should live after us,
O faithless ones, and that we die faithful.
O deserters, while we die faithful!
إِمّاif عَصَيناwe disobeyed فيكُمُconcerning you النُصَحاءَthe counselors
فبماthen because أَطَعناwe obeyed فيكُمُconcerning you البُرَحاءَfierce anguish
If we disobeyed the counselors concerning you,
Whether we obeyed censors among you,
it was because we obeyed fierce anguish over you.
Or obeyed the immoral among you.
أَنتَyou المَليحُthe lovely one وَذَلِكَand that اِسمُكَyour name مُنيَتيmy heart's desire
مِنsince يَومَthe day عَلَّمَHe taught آدَمَAdam الأَسماءَthe names
You are the Lovely One—that is your name—my heart's desire,
You are the beautiful one - that is your name.
since the day He taught Adam the names.
My death since the day Adam was taught the names.

O you whom I call 'my son,' yet you are one
O He whom I call "my son," and who is one
for love of whom sons disobey their fathers.
Who disobeys sons in his love of fathers!
