بِرَأيِكُمُby your counsel أَمسىhas become الزَمانُtime مُداراgoverned
وَكانَand it was مَخوفاًfeared قَبلَكُمbefore you وَمُدارىand appeased
By your counsel, time has come to be governed,
In your opinion, time has become favorable
and before you it was feared and appeased.
And was fearful before you and precarious
وَرُبَّand many a طَليقٍfree man قَدindeed أَسَرتُمyou have captured بِكَفِّكُمwith your hand
كَذاthus طُلَقاءُthose set free المَكرُماتِacts of generosity أَسارىcaptives
And many a free man have you taken captive with your hand;
And many a free man have you captured with your palm
thus those whom generosity frees are captives.
Thus are the noble ladies captives
I shall do justice to أَصنافَthe varieties of القَوافيrhyme بِمَدحِهِby praising him
فَإِنَّfor indeed القَوافيthe rhymes فيconcerning عُلاهُhis glory غَيارىjealous
I shall do justice to the varied rhymes by praising him,
I will be fair to the types of rhyme in praising him
for the rhymes are jealous rivals for his glory.
For the rhymes in his glory are jealous
فَإِنfor if أَبصَرواthey see فيon الطِرسِthe page أَثْرَthe trace of مِدادِهِhis ink
فَذَلِكَthen that سَبقٌa lead قَدindeed أَثارَhas stirred up غُباراdust
For if they see upon the page the trace of his ink,
If they see a trace of his ink on the parchment
then that is a lead that has stirred up dust.
That is a lead that has raised dust
تَفيضُyou overflow لَناfor us كَفّاًa hand وَلِلَهِand for God مُقلَةًan eye
فَتَجتَمِعُso they gather الأَنواءُthe rainstorms مِنكَfrom you غِزاراcopious
Your hand overflows for us, and your eye for God,
Pouring for us palms and for Him lightning bolts
so abundant rainstorms gather from you.
So the clouds gather from you pouring
وَتَقدَحُand you strike نارَthe fire of الحَربِwar مِنfrom أَزنُدِthe fire-sticks of الظُباsword-blades
فَتُرسِلُthen you send forth مِنfrom فَيضِthe flood of الدِماءِblood شَراراsparks
And you strike war's fire from the fire-sticks of sword-blades,
And kindling the fire of war from the flints of swords
then send forth sparks from the flood of blood.
Sending from the outpouring of blood, sparks
