لَعَمريby my life لَئِنindeed, if أَضحىhe became عَنِaway from الغيدِthe graceful maidens عادِياturning away
لَقَدindeed فَضَّهُhe laid it bare سِرّاًas a secret إِلىinto البيدِthe desert wastes بادِياmanifest
By my life, if he now turns away from graceful maidens,
By my life, though he has parted from his love at dawn,
He has indeed laid his secret bare, manifest in the desert wastes.
Indeed he confided to the desolate his secret displayed.
وَوَدَّعَهُand he bade it farewell مَغنىًa dwelling مِنَwith اللهوpleasure آهِلاًthronged
وَأَرخَصَهُand he spent it cheaply دَمعاًas tears عَلىfor المَجدِglory غالِياprecious
He bade farewell to a dwelling thronged with pleasure,
And bid farewell to pleasure, now grown old,
And freely spent tears precious for glory.
And let fall a tear, though glory is precious.
وَأَصبَحَand he became فيin بَحرٍa sea مِنَof الهَمِّsorrow غائِصاًdiving
فَأَطلَقَهاso he released them مِنfrom مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes لَآلِياpearls
He came to dive into a sea of sorrow,
And plunged into a sea of cares
And let pearls fall from his two eyes.
That burst forth from his eyelids unrestrained.
أَساءَكِit grieved you أَنthat أَضحىhe became عَنِfrom الذُلِّhumiliation راحِلاًdeparting
وَسَرَّكِand it pleased you أَنthat أَمسىhe became علىamid الغَيرِvicissitudes ثاوِياremaining
It grieved you that he departed from humiliation,
How I wished that he had parted from humiliation
And pleased you that he stayed amid vicissitudes.
And that you were pleased that he passed the night blaming others.
أَبيحيهِgrant him عَدلاًfairness مِنfrom خَلائِقِكِyour qualities الَّتيwhich

Grant him fairness from those qualities of yours
Reprove him justly for qualities of yours
That I see lent into the hands of calamities.
That I see made bare by the hands of events.

وَإِنeven if قَطَعَتcut off بَعدَafter اللَياليthe nights لَيالِياnights
Take reassurance from me against my bonds of union wearing thin,
Grant me safety from inheriting his farewells
Even if night after night is cut away.
Though after nights, nights again should divide.
أَتَخشَينَdo you fear إِنif طالَgrows long اللِقاءُthe meeting تَسَلِّياforgetfulness

وَتَخشَينَand you fear إِنif طالَgrows long الفِراقُthe separation تَأَسِّياconsolation
Do you fear forgetfulness if our meetings grow long,
Do you fear that if we meet I may jest?
And consolation if our parting grows long?
Or fear that if we part I may grieve?
هِبيgrant ليto me عِنانَthe reins الرَكبِof the caravan كَالدَمعِlike tears بَعدَهاafter her
فَإِنَّكِfor you ماnot اِستَغدَرتِdeemed treacherous إِلّاexcept وَفائِياmy fidelity
Grant me the caravan's reins, like tears in her wake,
Give me the camel's rein after her;
For you have deemed nothing treacherous but my fidelity.
You erred not save that my fidelity was surety.
لَغادَرتِyou indeed made بِالعَهدِthrough the pledge الغَوانِيَthe beauties أَنthat وَفَتkept faith
رِجالاًmen وَبِالغَدرِand through betrayal الرِجالَthe men غَوانِياbeauties
You have indeed made the beauties, through the pledge they kept,
With fidelity you left men of passion,
Into men, and through betrayal made men into beauties.
And with treachery you left passionate men.
وَلاand do not تُخدَعيbe deceived بالدَمعِby tears فَالدَمعُfor tears بَعضُهُsome of them

Do not be deceived by tears; some tears
And be not deceived by tears; some tears
Are a mirage; my suspicion of them carried me by night.
Are mirage, and my belief in them went not straight.
وَلَكِنand yet أَبَتrefused هَذيthese الخُدودُcheeks بِأَنto تُرىbe seen

Yet these cheeks refused to be seen
But these cheeks refused to show
As anything but adorned, though circumstances were bare.
Aught but my condition, however times be inert.

I marveled at them when my reason and my gaze went astray
I wondered, when my reason went astray and my sight
In them, though they appeared to beholders as brilliant stars.
Strayed toward them, and to lookers they glistened.
تَقولُshe says أَتَرميwill you cast away النَفسَthe self قُلتُI said لِعِلَّةٍfor a malady
وَتَرميand casts النَوىseparation بِالمُقتِرِينَthe destitute المَرامِياinto distant reaches
She says, “Will you cast your life away?” I said, “For a malady.”
You said, "Would you cast away your soul?" I said, "For an aim."
And separation casts the destitute into distant reaches.
And cast the stone at those who throw stones loftily.
لَعَلِّيَperhaps I يَشفينيwill cure me البِعادُdistance فَأَنشَدَتthen she recited
كَفىsuffices بِكَin you داءًas illness أَنthat تَرىyou see المَوتَdeath شافِياas healing
Perhaps distance will cure me; then she recited:
Perhaps distance may cure me. Then she recited:
“It is illness enough in you that you see death as a cure.”
"Enough that you see death as your physician."
وَقالَتand she said أَمانٍhopes وَدَّعَتbade farewell فَأَجبتُهاso I answered her

She said, “Hopes have departed”; I answered her:
She said "Farewell" and went her way. I replied:
“And God has gentle mercies that grant wishes.”
God has favors that grant all wishes.
بَكَيتُI wept فَماbut not آنَستُI found لِلدَمعِin tears راحَةًrelief

نَعَمindeed ماnot شُفِيَwas healed مَنwhoever ظَنَّthought أَنthat لاno تَلاقِياreunion
I wept, but found no relief in tears.
I wept but sensed no comfort for tears.
Indeed, none is healed who thinks there can be no reunion.
Yes, none is cured who thinks you will not meet.
وَإِنّيَand I indeed مِنfrom فَوقِabove التُرابِthe dust وَتَحتَهُand beneath it

لِأَحمِلُI surely bear عَهداًa pledge مِثلَlike حُبِّكِlove for you باقِياenduring
And I, above the dust and beneath it,
I, above dust and beneath it,
Will surely bear a pledge enduring like my love for you.
Will keep a pact like my love for you enduring,
وَأَبلىand I decay وَإِنeven though لَمnot يَبلَdecay حُبّيmy love فَإِنَّهُfor it

I shall decay, though my love will not; for it,
And though my love may not last, it is
Like your pledge, has not let time gloat over its decay.
Like your pact, Time has not gloated at its fading.
وَفيكand for you لَبِسناwe wore اللَيلَthe night ماnot شابَturned gray رَأسُناour head

For you we wore the night before our heads turned gray,
Through you we wore the night until our hair whitened
Until we cast it off and our forelocks grew white.
As we put it off, our temples turned hoary.
وَأَرضَيتُand I pleased فيin حبّيكِloving you مَنone who أَغضَبَangered العُلاglory
وَياand oh لَيتَهُwould that he لَوif only كانَwere عَنِّيَwith me راضِياpleased
In loving you I pleased one who angered glory,
I pleased in my love for you those angered by greatness.
And oh, would that he were pleased with me!
Would that he were pleased with me!
وَأَروَيتُand I drenched خَدّيmy cheek مِنwith دُموعٍtears وَرُبّماand sometimes
غَضِبتُI grew angry فَأَروَيتُso I gave drink العُلاglory وَالعَوالِياand the lofty spears
I drenched my cheek with tears, and sometimes
I watered my cheek with tears, and sometimes
Grew angry, then gave glory and the lofty spears their drink.
I grew angry and watered the heights and the lofty places.
وَفيكِand for you دَعَتنيcalled me قَفرَةٌa wilderness فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered it

فَهابَbut feared صَداهاits echo أَنto يَكونَbe جَوابِياmy reply
For your sake a wilderness called me, and I answered it,
In you a barren spot called me and I answered it,
But its echo feared to become my reply.
So my reply shied from being an answer.
أَبَحتُكِI disclosed to you سِرّاًa secret فيin الفُؤادِthe heart بِرَدِّهِby returning it
سَيبقىit will remain وَإِنeven if أَفنَيتُI destroy فيكِfor you فُؤادِياmy heart
I revealed to you a secret in my heart; on its return,
In my heart I concealed a secret love for you
It will remain, though I destroy my heart for you.
That will remain though you destroy my heart.

A counselor sought to cure me of you, but is turned back in anger,
A counselor blamed you to appease his anger
Though he had been a friend of pure affection.
As if he were the loyal, untainted friend.
وَوَاللَهِand by God لاnot حكَّمتُI made arbiter واشِيَa tale-bearer of حُبِّهاher love
وَلَوeven if كانَwere فيهاconcerning her الحُبُّlove بِالحُبِّagainst love واشِياa tale-bearer
By God, I have never let a tale-bearer judge her love,
By God, I would not have made a tattler an arbiter,
Even were love itself telling tales against love concerning her.
Even if the love were a tattler in it.
تَمَلّىtake pleasure بِقَلبٍin a heart سَرَّdelighted دَهرَكِyour lifetime شُغلُهُits occupation

فَلَمso not يَخلُwas free مِنof هَمٍّcare بِأَنbecause كانَit was خالِياempty
Take your pleasure in a heart whose occupation delighted your days,
One busied with a heart that your cares filled
It did not lack care merely because it was empty.
So it had no care though empty.
أَغِثنيrescue me بِماءِwith the water الوَصلِof union مَأواكِyour refuge إِنَّهُfor it

Rescue me, your refuge, with the water of union; it
Help me at your trysting-place with the water of union.
Was a sanctuary clothed in the dust of ardent pride.
It is a refuge that was hot from the burning wind.
وَأَروَيتُand I watered نارَthe fire الحُبِّof love فيهِwithin it وَرُبَّماand sometimes

I watered the fire of love within it, and sometimes
And I watered there the fire of love, and sometimes
Flames take hold of what was already hot.
The flames caught that which did not burn.
وَمِنand for أَجلِهاher sake أَبكيI make weep جُفوناًeyelids وَأَتَّقيand I guard against

For her sake I make eyelids weep, and guard against
For her sake I weep eyes that watch
Eyelids, and fear them—eyelids that assail me.
And eyes that I fear, eyes that attack.
وَأُثنيand I fold عَلىover نارٍa fire ضُلوعاًribs وَأَلتَظيand I blaze

وُلوعاًwith passion وَأَستَشفيand I seek healing دُموعاًtears جَوارِياflowing
I fold my ribs over a fire and blaze
For a fire I praise ribs that blaze
With passion, seeking healing in flowing tears.
And suffer burning and heal tears that scald.
إِلَيكَtoward you وَلاand not أُسميكَI name you أَضمَرتُI planned inwardly رِحلَةًa journey
وَأَبدَأَهاand began it لِلخَلقِfor mankind كَونُكَyour being بادِياmanifest
Toward you—without naming you—I planned a journey,
I set out to you, but do not name you, a journey
And your manifest presence set it in motion before the world.
And begin it though you are visible to people.
وَغَيرُكُمُand others than you الأَسماءُnames تَسموrise بِقَدرِهِthrough his worth

For others, names rise through their worth,
Others are named according to their worth,
But your worth has raised names to greater heights.
But your worth made names more lofty.

Sulayman is a king; when seeking him raised me,
When Solomon's desire summoned me,
I rode the wind toward him, seeking the morning voyagers.
I rode the wind, seeking the plains.

You see them, while the sea's deep waters foam,
You see it when the sea churns with waves
As scorpions harboring serpents of the sea within.
Scorpions lurking underneath drink from it.
وَأَحسَبُand I suppose أَخلاقَthe nature اللَياليَof nights ماnot عَفَتpardoned

لَهاthem عَنfor سُراهاtheir night-travel أَوor حُسِبنَthey were reckoned لَيالِياnights
I suppose the nature of nights has not pardoned
I reckon the character of nights, what they conceal
Them for their night-faring—or they have been reckoned nights.
Of their mysteries, are not counted as nights.
وَلَوand if لَمnot تَكُنthey were مِثلَlike اللَياليَthe nights لَمnot تَكُنthey would

If they were not like nights, they would not
Had they not been like nights, they would not
Stir up deaths or grant wishes.
Stir sorrows or attain wishes.
فَياso, O عَجَباًwonder مِنهاat them لَياليnights جيرَةٍneighborly company

سَرَينَthey traveled by night فَيَمَّمنَthen headed toward النُجومَthe stars هَوادِياas guides
How wondrous they are: nights of neighborly company,
Strange are they, neighboring nights
Traveling by night, turning toward the stars as guides.
That roamed and stared at the stars blankly,
طَلَعنَthey rose مَعَwith التَقويسِcurvature مِنهاof them أَهِلَّةًcrescent moons
وَكُنَّand they were مِنَin الأَلوانِcolors مِنهاof them دَآدِياdark month-end nights
They rose in their curved shapes like crescents,
Rose with the bow from them, crescent shaped,
And in their colors they were dark, moonless nights.
And were of their colors colors rich.
يَطِرنَthey fly بِحِملٍwith a load وَاِسوِدادِand blackness خَواطِرٍof thoughts
وَيَسلُكُand he traverses فَياso, O راكبوهاtheir riders مَغانِياdwelling-places
They fly with a load and darkened thoughts,
They flutter with a burden and blackened thoughts
And—O riders of them!—he traverses dwelling-places.
And he travels! So steer them, you voyagers of cares!
وَجُنحٍand a dusk أَرَشناwe feathered بِالصَباحِwith dawn جَناحَهُits wing
فَسِرناso we traveled سِهاماًas arrows كَالسِهامِlike arrows مَواضِياpiercing
And many a dusk whose wing we feathered with dawn,
On wings we fluttered at dawn, their wing,
So we traveled as arrows, swift as piercing arrows.
And sped, arrows like arrows in meadows.
وَنُصغيand we lend لَهاto them بِالقَلبِwith the heart أُذناًan ear سَميعَةًattentive

يَبيتُspends the night لَهاto them فَختُthe light السِماكِof al-Simak مُناجِياwhispering intimately
We lend them, with the heart, an attentive ear,
We listen in our hearts to them attentively
While al-Simak's light spends the night whispering to them.
So the fish of the deep spend the night conversing.
عَشِيَّةَon the evening أَعطَيناwe gave الرِياحَthe winds عِنانَهاtheir reins
وَأَعطَيتُand I gave أَحكامَthe decrees الزَمانِof time عِنانِياmy reins
That evening we gave the winds their reins,
At evening we gave the winds their reins
And I gave my reins to the decrees of time.
And I gave the epochs of time my reins.
نَسيرُwe move رِياحاًlike winds وَالرِياحُand the winds نُسيرُهاwe drive them
وَنَثبُتُand we stand firm أَطواداًlike mountains خِفافاًlight رَواسِياfirmly anchored
We move like winds, and make the winds move,
We race winds and they race us
And stand like mountains, light yet firmly anchored.
And we stand firm, light swift steeds.
بَنَيناwe built فُوَيقَjust above الماءِthe water مِنهاfrom them مَعاقِلاًfortresses

وَلاand no أَسرَcaptivity إِلّاexcept أَنthat وَضَعناwe set down المَراسِياthe anchors
From them we built fortresses just above the water,
Of the water's expanse we built from them fortresses,
No bondage held us save our setting down the anchors.
Nor did we tie up except when we dropped anchor.
فَأَرسَلتُso I released فَوقَabove الريحِthe wind مِنهاfrom them طَوافِياًfloating ones
وَأَمسَكتُand I held fast تَحتَbeneath البَحرِthe sea مِنهاfrom them طَوافِياfloating ones
I sent some of them floating above the wind,
I launched galleys above the wind from them
And held some of them floating beneath the sea.
And held back galleys beneath the sea from them.
رَكَضنَthey galloped مُنيباتٍturning repentantly إِلىtoward اللَهِGod أَرجُلاًfeet

They galloped, their feet turning repentantly toward God,
Thoroughbreds galloped to God on legs
And stood, their masts turning repentantly to Him.
And thoroughbreds rose to Him, towering.

What raven but these reunites those parted,
What crow but them will bring the tribe together again
And through which the stranger far from home hopes for nearness?
And the stranger hopes through them for approach?
عَلَيَّupon me لِنَفسيto my soul أَنto أُطيعَobey اِشتِطاطَهاits excessive demands

I owe it to my soul to obey its excessive demands
Woe to me, if I obey the rage of my soul,
Upon me, when it seeks nothing but lofty attainments,
Woe to me, if it craves nothing but the heights!
وَأَلّاand not to أَكُرَّsend charging القَلبَthe heart صُبحاًat dawn أَمامِياahead of me

وَأَلّاand not to أَجُرَّdrag الطَرفَthe gaze لَيلاًat night وَرائِياbehind me
And not send my heart charging ahead of me at dawn,
I must not crane my heart forward by day
And not drag my gaze behind me at night.
Nor crane my eye backward by night.
إِذاwhen ناصِرُchampion الأَملاكِof kings ناجَتهُconfided in him هِمَّتيmy ambition
فَهَيهاتَthen far be it يَمضيpasses away مِنfrom يَديmy hand الدَهرُtime ناجِياunscathed
When my ambition confides in the champion of kings,
When my wish's ally conversed with Him,
Far be it that time should escape my grasp unscathed.
Then far-fetched that time should pass conversing!
وَأَوَّلُand the first شَرطٍcondition بَعدَafter شَوقيmy longing التَزَمتُهُI committed to it
بِأَنَّthat ثَنائيmy praise لاnot أُوَلّيهِI grant it to ثانِياa second
And the first condition, after my longing, that I pledged to keep:
The first condition that I obliged after longing
That I would not grant my praise to a second.
Is that my praise is given to none but you.
نَزَلتُI alighted فِناءًa courtyard مِنكَof yours كَالدَهرِlike time رَحبُهُits spaciousness
فَأَملَيتُso I dictated شُكراًthanks فيكَfor you لِلدَهرِto time مالِياfilling it
I alighted in a courtyard of yours as spacious as time,
I alighted through you to a vast courtyard
And dictated thanks for you to time, filling it.
And so brimmed with thanks to you for time's plenty.
أَرىI see كُلَّevery ذِكرٍremembrance غَيرَexcept ذِكرِكَremembrance of you يَنقَضيcomes to an end
فَدونَso take العُلاglory ماwhat لاnot يَمَلُّtires of التَقاضِياdemanding one's due
I see every remembrance but remembrance of you come to an end,
I see all remembrance but yours perishing.
For glory, then, take what never tires of pressing its claim.
Apart from the heights, nothing is inexhaustible to repay!
يَجودُhe gives generously وَلَوeven if بِالسَيفِwith the sword إِنif ظَلَّhe spends the day غائِراًraiding
وَيَندىand he gives lavishly وَلَوeven if بِالماءِwith water إِنif باتَhe spends the night صادِياthirsty
He gives freely, even with the sword, when he spends the day raiding,
It runs freely even by the sword if hidden
And is lavish, even with water, when he spends the night thirsty.
And flows even by water if passing the night stagnant.
إِذاwhen غَضبَةٌa fit of anger مِنهُfrom him كَفىmay avert اللَهُGod شَرَّهاits harm
أُفيضَتwas poured عَلىupon الأَيّامِthe days عادَتthey became لَيالِياnights
When a fit of his anger—may God avert its harm—
When an outburst of anger from Him is enough, God spare its evil!
Is poured upon the days, they turn to nights,
It overflows the days and they return nights.
بِآيَةِas a sign أَنَّthat النَقعَbattle dust يَأكُلُdevours نورَهاtheir light
وَتَرجِعُand return بِالبيضِwith the bright swords النُجومُthe stars بَوادِياmanifest
As shown by battle dust devouring their light,
It is shown by the bats eating its light
And stars returning, visible in the bright swords.
And stars revert to the wastes with their whiteness.
وَكانَتand were بُيوتُthe houses المُلكِof kingship مَنقوضَةَdemolished البِناin construction
فَجِئتُمso you came عَلىin الأَعقابِthe wake فيهاwithin them قَوافِياrhymes
The houses of kingship had their structure torn down,
The homes of kings lay in rubble
And you came in their wake as the rhymes that complete them.
So you came on their heels and rhymed their ends.
سَطَوتُمyou struck fiercely فَلَمso not تَبقواyou left عَدُوّاًan enemy مُبائِناًopenly hostile
وَجُدتُمand you gave generously فَلَمso not تَبقواyou left عَدُوّاًan enemy مُداجِياconcealing enmity
You struck, leaving no openly hostile enemy,
You mastered, leaving no resisting foe,
And gave freely, leaving no enemy hiding his hatred.
You charged, leaving no attacking foe.
وَجَرَّدتُمُand you unsheathed بَينَbetween الزَمانِtime وَبَينَناand us
سِيوفاًswords عَلىagainst أَيديthe hands العَواديof calamities عَوادِياassailing
Between time and us you drew
And you bared between time and us
Swords that assailed the hands of assailing calamities.
Swords in the hands of foes, returning foes.
وَأَمهَرتُمُand you gave as dowry الدُنياthe world سُيوفاًswords بَواسِماًsmiling
نَكَحنَthey wed رِقاباًnecks لِلأَعاديof enemies بَواكِياweeping
You gave the world a dowry of smiling swords,
And you sharpened swords on the world, Indian swords
Which wed the enemies' weeping necks.
That marry the necks of foes, weeping.
بَعَثتَyou sent الرَدىdeath نَحوَtoward المَقاتِلِthe vital spots رائِداًas a scout
وَقامَand stood النَدىgenerosity بَينَamong الأَمانيwishes مُنادِياcalling aloud
You sent death scouting toward the vital spots,
You unleashed havoc toward the fighter, a guide,
And generosity stood among wishes, calling aloud.
And glory stood between hopes, crying aloud.
فَأَبقىso may preserve بِهاthrough them الرَحمَنُthe Merciful مُلكَكَyour kingdom إِنَّهاfor they

May the Merciful preserve your kingdom through them; they are
So the Merciful made your rule endure; they are
Keen blades through which lifespans pass into the past.
Places where lifetimes spend the night at meadows.
