As he recalled the days of the pampered camel,
A spring of carnelian flowed from his eye.
فَمِنهاso from it وَالحَياand the rain ماthe fact that اِحمَرَّturned red ماءٌwater

From it and the rain came the water's redness;
It watered, and soil split open to reveal anemones.
وَلَيسَand is not الدَمعُthe tears مِنهُfrom him صَوبَa downpour ماءِof water

Nor are his tears a downpour of water,
As they supposed, but the molten flow of fire.

مِنَof الأَنفاسِbreaths يَأخُذُseizes بِالمَضيقِat the narrow passage
The reproacher demands that I hear words
That seize the breath at its narrow passage.

Hold on! I will not lend you my ear in betrayal.
Should I listen to an enemy concerning a friend?

And his words found their place with me,
A place long described as far removed.
وَماand what حُسنُbeauty السَلامَةِof safety فَوقَon بَرٍّdry land
وَياand oh قُبحَthe ugliness الشَماتَةِof gloating بِالغَريقِover the drowning man
And what is so fine about safety on dry land?
And oh, how ugly to gloat over a drowning man!
