وَكُلَّماand whenever قُلتُI uttered مَعنىًa thought لَستُI do not أَحفَظُهُretain it
قَدindeed قالَit said دَعنيleave me فَإِنَّfor indeed الناسَpeople تَحفَظُنيremember me
And whenever I uttered a thought I did not know by heart,
it would say, “Leave me, for people will remember me.”
فَقُلتُso I said إِذthen ذاكَthat لِلدَهرِto Time المُسيءِthe wrongdoer بِناtoward us
أَنتَyou المُسيءُthe wrongdoer الَّذيwho أَحسَنتَyou did good بِالمِحَنِthrough afflictions
So then I said to Time, which mistreats us:
“You are the wrongdoer who did good through afflictions.”

You grew angry for my sake—may the Merciful be pleased with you and with
your father—when you saw Time angering me.
فَاِعطِفso add عَلىupon أَثَرِthe trace of الإِحسانِkindness زَهرَتَهُits blossom

So follow the trace of kindness with its blossom,
for blossom after fruit is the branch’s duty.

O you who made lofty honors and praise available to their praiser,
their aims do not lie beyond the discerning’s reach (reading uncertain).
فَصارَso became أَلكَنُthe most tongue-tied خَلقِcreatures of اللَهِGod ذاpossessed of بِدَعٍmarvels
وَصارَand became أَبدَعُthe most inventive خَلقِcreatures of اللَهِGod ذاpossessed of لَكَنِinarticulateness
So the most tongue-tied of God’s creatures became a maker of marvels,
and the most inventive of God’s creatures became tongue-tied.
