وَعَقرَبٍand a scorpion فيon الخَدِّthe cheek قَدindeed رابَنيtroubled me
وَعَقرَبٍ في الخَدِّ قَد رابَني
فيacross ذَهَبِthe gold of الخَدَّينِboth cheeks مَمشاهاits path
في ذَهَبِ الخَدَّينِ مَمشاها
And a scorpion on the cheek—what has troubled me

مَكتوبَةٌinscribed وَالعَينُand the eye تَقراreads فَلَوso if
مَكتوبَةٌ وَالعَينُ تَقرا فَلَو
أَمكَنَناwere possible for us اللَثمُkissing مَحَوناهاwe would erase it
أَمكَنَنا اللَثمُ مَحَوناها
It is inscribed, and the eye reads it; so if
Inscribed it is, whilst the eye doth gaze,
kissing were possible for us, we would erase it.
Had we access, we would efface.
