حِcompletion of “dawn” شَوقاًyearning إِلىfor القَسَماتِthe facial features الصَبيحَهlovely
And a night whose dawn is slow to rise,
The slow night of the dawn's youth
in yearning for those lovely features.
Yearned with desire for the radiant fates
أَبَحتَyou made fair game فُؤاديmy heart وَأَنتَand you المُباحُthe one made fair game
وَماand not كانَwas مِنof حَقِّهِits due اَنthat تُبيحَهyou make it fair game
You made my heart fair game, though you yourself are fair game;
You unlocked my heart while being benevolent
and it did not deserve to be made fair game by you.
It was not right that you make it benevolent

Nor did they yield in battling the reprover—
The viciousness of a raging heart did not help me
the reins of a heart, unruly against them.
In the battle against separation
مُعَنّىtormented بِريحِby the wind شَمالِnorth الشَآمِal-Sham
لَقَدindeed عَذَّبَtormented اللَهُGod بِالريحِwith the wind روحَهhis spirit
Tormented by the north wind of al-Sham,
My essence is preoccupied with the north wind of Syria
God has indeed tormented his spirit with the wind.
God has surely tortured his soul with the wind
فَلاso may … not رَوَّحَgrant relief اللَهُGod مِنfrom قُربِكُمnearness to you

So may God never grant relief from yearning for your nearness
May God not comfort my heart from your nearness
to my heart through a soothing thought of despair.
With a whiff of relieving despair
