رَجُلٌa man تَوَكَّلَundertook the task ليfor me وَكَحَّلَنيand applied kohl to my eyes
رَجُلٌ تَوَكَّلَ لي وَكَحَّلَني
فَدُهيتُso I was afflicted فيin عَينيmy eye وَفيand in عَينيmy money (a pun on ‘eye’)
فَدُهيتُ في عَيني وَفي عَيني
A man undertook my care and applied kohl to my eyes.
A man trusted in me and kohl'd my eyes
So both my eye and my money came to grief.
So I was dazzled in my eyes and my eyes
وَخَشيتُand I feared تَنقُلُwould change نَقطَthe dots of كُحلَتِهِhis application of kohl
وَخَشيتُ تَنقُلُ نَقطَ كُحلَتِهِ
عَيَنَّan eye (reading uncertain) مِنfrom عَينٍ‘ayn (ع, also ‘eye’) غِلىto (apparently intended) غَينِghayn (غ, a dotted ‘ayn)
عَيَنَّ مِن عَينٍ غِلى غَينِ
And I feared the dots of his kohl would turn
And I feared his kohl drops would transfer
an eye from ‘ayn to ghayn.
From an eye of one harboring rancor to an eye
