    A letter containing the water of life and a pool of

    rain—so, when I obtained it, I was like al-Khidr.

    وَذَلِكَ ما لا يَدَّعي مِثلَهُ البَحرُ

    Necklaces—pearls whose sea you are;

    And that is something the sea cannot claim to match.

    Gardens to be harvested by hand, eye, and mind,

    Where blossom, bloom, and fruit raced one another.

    Their harvests delight when thirst does harm,

    And their channels quench thirst when rain is miserly.

    فَلَمّا بَدا كَبَّرتُ إِذا طَلَعَ الفَجرُ

    I was like a traveler in the heart of night;

    Then, when it appeared, I cried 'God is great!' as dawn rose.

    So I imagined the eye among the clouds of his palm,

    For from this and from that, pearls are scattered in it.

    And I had not expected, after the sin of parting from him,

    That I would see a day of which Time gives promise.

    In it, both have a long swim; so this one

    Is coolness to the mind, and in peril a full moon.

    فَيَبلى وَلا يَبلى وَإِن بَلى الدَهرُ

    The robe of ever-new day and night passes over it ceaselessly;

    It wears out, but the letter does not, even should Time wear out.

    فَدَع عَنكَ هَذا الأَمرَ قَد قُضِيَ الأَمرُ

    And never can what has passed of Time return;

    So set this matter aside; the matter is already settled.
