Whose spring encampment is this, where pied crows caw?

The calamities of fate have played havoc with it.

I stood there after its inhabitants had gone, and already

the east and south winds had effaced it after them.

They departed, while my eye quivered with a tear,

and my heart melted upon the embers of passion.

So I sought a glimpse of them as they struck their tents,

while my eyelids streamed with tears.

I kept turning my gaze after them, with

wailing and sobbing over their tracks.

And a sun, as lovely as the sun itself, had

her rising and setting at the tent's edges.

I visited her tent after the darkness had closed in,

and her ill-wisher and watcher had gone.

I said to her, as love drew me toward her,

"Have I no share of you, O beautiful one?

And will the beloved grant union and favor,

so a lover may delight in union with the beloved?"

She softened at my words in tenderness and bent toward me,

as a fresh, supple bough of the ban-tree bends.

I spent the night with her rejoicing, kissing a smiling mouth

where Babylonian wine was mingled with clear water.

And I sipped saliva from it whose coolness quenched

the flame of love's embers between my ribs.

She leaned toward me with pomegranates reaching for me

close beside me, while the path of union lay wide.

And her waist, though slender, was tugged at

by a mound of her haunches, like a sand-dune.

Lithe and slender-waisted—all of me, to all of her,

is captive, wounded, and forlorn with passion.

She mingles favor with displeasure, and displeasure with favor,

so my heart is doubtful of union with her.

She has indeed clothed me in a robe of sickness, and there was

no physician among humankind for my sickness but her.

My cure and my ailment lie with her, so consider

what has come from her—this is wondrous indeed.

And a desolate, barren waste—I entrusted its crossing to

a vigorous she-camel that folds up and traverses the wastes.

The strain of travel had consumed her flesh, so her body

was lean, marked by scars from the girth-straps.

Whenever she gazed ahead on the journey, there shone before her eyes

lightnings of hope, their rain pouring down:

lightnings of hope from Falah ibn Muhsin,

throughout all time, whoever hopes for them is never disappointed.

A generous man, with the keen sword of liberality and bounty,

he strikes hard at the brow of his petitioners' barren want.

He shrinks from shameful deeds, yet he

leaps to seize the banners of praise.

And were some of his forbearance measured in weight,

Yadhbul and ʿAsib would seem light beside it.

Long have their fruits refined him—

his battles against the foes, and his wars.

No seeker of his bounty departs without having

    a large baggage-camel and a led mount.

And take, O peerless one of the age, a radiant poem: there are no

    blameworthy faults within it.

I have openly called upon you for fulfillment and leave to depart,

and you answer your persistent petitioner.

I asked my own surmise, "What of departure—or when?"

It said, "Make ready; it is near indeed."

    وَهل يَملُل الخلّ الأديب أديبُ

    I did not ask you for leave to depart out of weariness;

and would a cultured man tire of a cultured friend?

But I have family whose land I have left,

and my heart throbs with fear of separation.

When our bodies parted and drew far apart,

hearts met between us, heart with heart.

So generously grant me leave from you to depart,

that I may return to them with joy.
