Trust in reason rather than your brother, for sometimes

reason has been a brother in your brother's stead.

How often, through reason, hardship has become ease, and how often

ease has become hardship through ignorance.

And be lenient with your brother, for if you burden him

beyond all bounds, you turn his kindness into disloyalty.

O men, help against the rule of an evil age—

the scoundrel's suspicion of it has come true.

An age whose forbearing man, among the people, has become

tongue-tied, while its fool has become eloquent.

And its praised nobleman's standing has worn thin,

while its scoundrel has indeed become worthy within it.

And the free man is shackled, kept from attaining his aims,

while the base man pursues his desire unfettered.

And those of distinction, intelligence, and forbearance have

been cast aside to a far-distant place.

And I see within it those living in luxury, who through their ignorance

have led their people astray into unbelief and wickedness.
