Sufficient punishment for the envier's offense is

the ember of envy within his limbs.

No wonder if his body melts away with envy,

for this malady weakens the body's health.

Were he not judged by the Creator, I say: surely

it would suffice him to have lived until he died of anguish.

The pleasure of every sin may be hoped for—

except envy—nay, this is a malady of the liver.

What does the ignorant, inexperienced envier do with the

envied man, if he gains eminence one day while the envier has not?

All vices, if their perpetrator dies,

vanish altogether and remain upon no one.

    But loathsome envy accompanies

its bearer in the Fire for all eternity.
