She visited when the robe of darkness had already been drawn down,
She visited, with the robe of darkness already drawn down,
while the stars of night kept watch over wandering eyes.
and the stars of night guarding the squinting eyes.

The Pleiades could be seen in the sky, a trembling glitter;
And you see a shimmer of the Pleiades in the sky,
you would think it a lamp in the farthest reaches of heaven.
which you would take for a lamp in the sky’s farthest reaches.

Her imprint upon my bed became my fate—
So her nature, in my bed, became my fate,
rushing on with death, a doom decreed and dispatched.
surging with death, decreed and sent.

Who will bring me Sa‘da, when the camel-drivers have urged along with her
driving the swift pale camels on their journey of separation?
the swift pale camels on her journey toward separation?

She departed: no neck leaned toward another neck,
nor had a hand met hers in kissing and embrace.
nor did a hand meet the touch of lips and kisses.

Had you been beside her, you would have kissed her honeyed mouth.

Dark-eyed and wide-eyed, the very sum of every shapely beauty,
Kohl-eyed, born of every young doe,
her lowered gaze kohled by the sorcery of loveliness.
with a downcast gaze, kohled with beauty’s magic.

after her sleep, had been steeped in musk.
after her sleep, steeped in musk.

The hopes she stirred and the meeting she promised
Her hopes and her promise

of union were nothing but falsehoods and deceit.

If delaying me suits you, then indeed
