Are these suns of the spheres rising

    before those springtime dwellings,

or are they graceful women, whose veils have parted

    from their faces' beauty?

    Tame gazelles are they, in

the meadow of our hearts, grazing freely.

    If they commit a fault,

    beauty intercedes for them.

And one with languid glances—the wound

her glances inflict spreads through my heart.

She rose to bid me farewell, and already

parting's cleaving force had rent my heart.

So I drew near her to bid

farewell, and my hidden secret was laid bare.

Then she clung to the baldric of my

sword, with tears flowing from her eyes.

    Thanks be to that

farewell, though separation makes it grievous:

    it paired forearms with

    forearms, and ribs with ribs.

    I clasped her hand, bidding

farewell as one departing bids another farewell.

    And likewise chests with

    chests, and fingers with fingers.

And I embraced her at our meeting,

    as one bedfellow embraces another.

Ah, if only I knew—will our

days of youth and pleasure return?

Why do I see the world mingling

    our joy with calamities?

And the gains of the days have never

been in our hands except as things held in trust.

    Beware—indeed, beware—lest

greedy ambitions detract from your character.

And whenever you sow, you will reap—

    you yourself, swiftly—what you sow.

And when you send forth verse from

yourself, and it is among the noblest wares,

do not give it to one who is not

worthy, for praise has its proper places.

And single out ʿArār with your

    verse's rarities and marvels.

A king: when he lifts the

veil, you see light shining from him.

And you see delegations visiting him,

    some seeking favor, others content.

And he scatters his ancestral wealth,

    yet he gathers praise.

An ocean: the harms of humankind

arise from him, and so do their benefits.

And an Indian-steel blade, polished by

the vicissitudes of experience and battle.

Far be it that he should be matched in

    endeavors, favors, and benefactions!

O you whom the God of all

worlds raises in rank among the shining stars,

I glimpsed the lightning of generosity from

you flashing, so I came toward it seeking bounty.
