And of a time generous with loved ones.
And the covenant of an era generous with loved ones

Oh if only I knew will I see the days of youth again
Return to us, or will that time never return?
Return to us or will that not come back?

A time when Umaym and her family were
A time when Ummayma and her people were close to me
Our neighbors, and union's wellsprings were sweet.
As good neighbors, with sweet connection between us

And there I feared neither watcher nor envier.
Fearing no critic or envier

I would go at evening, youth's bloom my intercessor
The prime of youth plead for me before her
With her, and go at dawn, with time on my side.
And time was cooperative and helpful

I let the trailing trains of my cloak flow in every field
And let my glances' little camel-herd roam over every high-breasted maiden.
And unleash the herds of my glances on every delicate girl

The greeting of a devoted lover with a love-stricken heart?
The greetings of a heart passionately in love?

One of the slender-waisted women, dark-lipped, slim of belly,
Of handsome figure, teeth bright as hailstones
Plump in both calves, her forearms full.
Legs well-shaped, arms supple and plump

She would secretly glance at me and pierce my core
With arrows of glances aimed at the heart's sheath.
With arrows of a look, well-aimed by a desirous eye

Its light shining through, as through woven cloaks.

Deeply dark-lipped, sweet and cool to kiss.
Warmer than the heat of embers, cooler than chilled drink

So who will help, now that the camels of my loved ones
Carry them across the breadth of deserts and barren plains—
Roam the expanse of the desert sands?

And the sweetness of its nights, with the longing of bereaved women.
And its blessed nights, with a lost one's sorrow

No good from it, corrupted with vice

I reproach my fate - the nights bear witness
That my fortune breaks its promises.
That fate has failed to keep its promised meetings

The cleaving of enemy crowns and the backs of their skulls.
Cleaving the skulls and necks of foes

Of glory - none paved that ascent but you
