Ah, has the warbling gray dove grieved you

on the morning Thahmad stood empty of the tribe's dwellers?

And, after Umaym departed and bade farewell,

did her faded traces and old dwelling grieve you?

She swayed in youth's bloom and bent gracefully,

as swayed the bending branch of a ban tree.

Youth's vigor makes her light when she rises,

and her buttocks weigh her down when she sits.

By God, how we stood together when she bade farewell—

a farewell that misleads the love-stricken and guides him!

All day I kept turning my gaze, while in my breast

embers of longing, fiercely kindled, blazed.

And I glimpsed her fingertips and wrist,

and a Yemeni smile, and a rose-tinted cheek.

We stood upon our feet, while our sighing

rose from longing within our breaths.

Silent, with no speech but an outpouring of tears

that spoke for us of love and bore witness.

Ah, sow kindness so that you may reap praise,

for its sower gathers the fruits and harvests them.

And be patient with close kin and others,

for every patient soul is praised for patience.

Do not grieve if you live among them much envied,

for a man of merit is much envied among humankind.

And take, since prosperity has settled with you,

your bounty is hoped for, and fortune favors you.

I knew the nights, just as they were certain

that in my knowledge of them I was unrivaled.

And I grappled with them until they bent and swayed—

their ill fortunes and good, under my handling.

For often I kept company with Time when he favored

us, supple in the prime of youth.

And I accompanied him afterward, when he was aged,

and his eye was too bleared to see the path of truth.

I am not content with an age whose kings

have hands of stone when generosity is called for.

You see them, through scant understanding, make Suha renowned

in their eyes, while belittling Simak and Gharqad.

And the greatest loser among God's creatures is one who lies,

divulging a secret, yet saying nothing that fills a need.

And the greatest loser among God's creatures is one who gains wealth

and ease, yet no hand is then outstretched to him.

To you, Sulayman, I offer an open reproach,

to renew your favor toward me and confirm it.

My confinement and waiting have indeed grown long, and no

thunderer from lavish rain clouds has brought me your bounty.

Three months have passed for me and gone,

and no promise from you has been fulfilled for me, my lord.

I could not tell: was this delay meant to send me away?

For one like you brings people near and sends them away.

And if this delay ends in a gift,

wretched is a gain involving such long, bewildered waiting.

But if this is delay intended to send me away,

one like you brings people near and sends them away.

Do you not see that Time grinds his fang

against me, and calamities' sword is unsheathed?

Would you be content for me to go to al-Sham or to

Khurasan, wandering in pursuit of wealth?

I am your poet, O house of Nabhan,

whose praises of you travel through lowlands and highlands.

Ah, sorrow! Ah, my heart's anguish, my palms struck in regret

over a bygone age in which I had a watering place!

An age in which kings sought what I

fashioned in my finely wrought poems and recited.

Your father bestowed gifts on me, just as

I wove for him praise that never runs out.

    فَمَدحي لَهم في الدهرِ باقٍ مخلَّدُ

    And his uncles feathered my wing with their bounty;

so my praise of them endures through time, immortal.

I never knew that this Time, after them,

would cloud my life with his vicissitudes and embitter it.

Nor did I know that after them I would see estrangement

cloud life's serenity in that age and embitter it.

I am no intruder upon kings through my poetry,

however mighty they are, or unassailable their thicket and lineage.

I never knew that I would be disappointed, or see

the wares of my poetry go unsold with one like you.

Every noble, refined man will enjoy my poetry,

and among men a stingy, contentious man will be denied it.
