Whether you drew near or persisted in turning away,

I am content with loving you, O beautiful one.

By God, you did not turn away; rather, you spared me

The excesses of passion, and rose above my desires.

When I meet you, I see you as nothing but an enchantment,

Heavenly in its radiance and flashing light.

How often I tried to shut my eyes to it,

Only to find them powerless to close.

And I went seeking forgetfulness, and my soul let loose

The reins of its galloping steed.

It crosses the fire of a blazing desert

And wades through the coolness of streams and gardens.

And I met others besides you, yet the remnant of my soul

Encountered nothing but burning and scorching.

And I replaced you with pleasures, but my soul found

None like the delight of the dream of you I took instead.

And I obeyed, then disobeyed; then you found me

In your hands—not through abasement or blind indulgence,

But because, whenever you cross my mind, there takes shape

Your world, hastening to me with the most wondrous past!
