    Summer nights in Capri—

    Or enchantment in the sea?

And the fairies of the Mediterranean—

    Or a world of magic?

    Upon a shore of dreams,

    And melodies and flowers,

    يُفَضِّضهُ سَنَا البَدْرِ

    Its air breathed fragrance,

    The full moon's radiance silvers it;

In it is the fragrance of oranges,

And the wafting scent of fresh grapes.

Or the gods in love, between

    The waves and the rocks,

    Appeared beneath sails

    Bearing the brides of poetry,

    Drunk on beauty and light—

And some light is like wine.

He sighed when he beheld them—

    A lover with a rancor-filled breast,

Who had lived through the ages, aggrieved

    By deprivation and abandonment,

With breaths that light the horizon,

    Volcanic in their glowing embers.

    وَجُزْنَاهُ مع الفجرِ

    We sought him by night,

    And passed him at dawn;

And no eye of his closed,

    Striking the stars with terror.

And all night the waves retreated

    Around him, and surged back.

Then they said, “The appointed hour draws near,

    Or he has announced vengeance.”

So we returned just as we had come,

    From shore to shore;

And deep within the rock we sought

    A passageway of gold.

Sleeping water, as a secret glides.

    Lights spread all around us

    In necklaces of pearls,

    From blue to yellow,

    To green, to red.

As though the sun, when she saw

Her youth at the dawn of time,

    Was elated by nakedness, abashing

The eyes of the people on land,

    Then came to it veiled,

    Gliding along its current,

And shed some of her gauzy robes,

    And cast them upon the rock;

    And drowsiness betrayed her eye,

    So she slept, unaware!
