Sing of the Hijra, year after year,

And call for truth, and proclaim peace.

And flow gently, O my verse, as melody,

And wander between waves and clouds.

Never granted, on any day, to a tyrant who transgressed,

Or to a fierce aggressor with a murderous sword,

But to an unarmed preacher among his people,

Whose blood was free to be shed, whose protection was cast aside.

In which the blind and those who feign blindness have seen!

The speech of lofty, mighty gods.

In barren lands and green, flourishing ones:

Be anything but the cradle of noble free people.

That is a glory its people did not attain

    Through wishing, singing, and words,

But through pain, patience, and exhaustion,

And tears, and noble, streaming blood.

Tell her: The millstone is turning,

And the nights pass between charges and clashes.

And gather your resolve for the day that

Carries glad tidings to the lovers of peace!
