Sing in the valleys of spring and roam,

And describe nature, O maiden of the countryside.

The year's autumn departed after its spring,

And how many a spring has passed after an autumn!

O sister of the rising suns, look

At the roses, some in bloom and some still closed.

And the birds call loudly; at one clouded horizon

They dart toward the clouds; at another they rise into view,

Yearning, they seek the streams, weeping

For every delicate vision of spring.

Winter gave them, from sorrow's melodies,

The winds' clamor and the shadoof's groan.

This one freely sheds its tears, while these

Shift between tolling in the hills and rushing.

Indeed, I remember our field, and nights

    That blossomed in luxuriant shade beside it;

And our playground in the northern villages, and our hut

Beneath the trellises, in the shade of luffa vines.

We encounter grove beside grove around us,

Embracing one another in ample, striped robes.

Memory of childhood, for youth you alone are

A dream that soothes its cares with beauty.

Ah, many a faded trace of your abodes—

My stay there was brief, yet long my lingering.

Indeed, I have passed through life since you, wandering

Across the earth alone, without a companion.

The heart turned away from youth and its diversions,

And parted from loved ones, though not in aversion.

Ah, many a night—through its depths crept

A band of us, walking in the wake of another band.

We follow the birds' tracks, wandering

Among the palms, upon the sands of the shore.

    النجمُ في خفقٍ له ورفيفِ

    A singer here, and there the ringing of a lute;

The star throbs and flutters to its sound.

And the full moon, veiled by the clouds, is like

A face aglow from behind a veil.

And the river, with its smooth-flowing murmur, is like

A lyre whose music is magical.

Rise, maidens of the countryside, and seek the hills

Verdant; sing beside the pool and roam.

And seek shade beneath the spreading, shady trees, and a retreat

For art beneath blossoms and clusters of fruit.

A branch, from whose leaves dawn looks out,

And kisses the dewdrops, deeply enamored.

Where is the pool, upon which he bestows his brocade,

Deft of fingers, wondrous in his striped designs?

Ah, how lovely it is as a playground for the east wind,

And the hut as our winter home and summer retreat!

Images that alighted upon a painter's fingertips,

Painted from a radiant, noble design,

Lured childhood's dream and love toward me,

And stirred in me the memory of country nights.
