She glided before their eyes like a vision,

    embracing deities in her imagination.

    Unclad, she believed herself

within an unreachable sanctuary of art.

So she does not sense the longing of souls,

    nor does she sense the eyes of men;

nor does she see anything but her deity,

upon his throne of wondrous majesty.

Passion summoned her into his presence,

and art is nothing but passion and obedience.

    عَلَتْ وجهَها مَسْحَةٌ من خبَالْ

    So she hastened to him, as though bewitched;

a touch of madness overspread her face.

And in her soul was a sweet rapture,

like a forsaken woman given hope of reunion.

You see her as she circles around him:

youth is her splendor, and coquetry has adorned her.

She gathers her sash and casts it aside,

and in her steps are pride and swagger.

Like a horsewoman who clasped her sword,

and cast it aside after a long struggle.

She stretches out her hands and bends them back,

and draws back, bending and straightening.

Like a spring-nymph winding up the rope,

and drawing up the brimming buckets.

Her spectral form elusive amid a surge

of light that engulfs her wherever it roams.

She seems, to the eye beholding her,

a garden butterfly whom the shadows have shunned,

and a lily at the heart of a crystal,

upon the sun’s fluttering fringe at noon.

She flits like a dream between eyelids,

and like lightning between mountain peaks,

on two toes of a foot inspired

with the east wind’s rush and the gazelle’s leap.

And she lets her two arms flow,

like two branches of a stream pouring forth.

As though they trace around her

the contours of a body of matchless form.

She would not let them touch it with both palms,

while passion approves and beauty desires it!

And how strange—though she is spellbound,

she shows you guidance, and shows you going astray.

She writhes and forgets herself, like a flame

dancing before the wicks burn out.

And she rises and falls like a sail

the south wind and the north toss to and fro.

And she runs, as though a hand behind her

were tormenting her with long whips.

And she crawls, raising her face

with a penitent’s humility in fervent prayer.

And she falls submissively upon her brow,

like a turtledove fallen into snares.

    Her breast exudes anguish,

and throbs—not from sickness or fatigue.

But it is part of her longing,

and part of what the nights have entrusted to her!
