    أسِرُّ إلى الوادي نجيَّةَ شاعرِ

    On the white rock, darkness cast its shade over me;

I whisper a poet's secret to the valley.

I heard the sea roar around me, and it stirred within me

the stirrings of a heart whose depths foam and roar.

I stood, letting thought spread through them, as though

my thought were swimming toward the unknown shore.

And the sorrowful west had spread its shadows

over the crests of the waves, with their disheveled tresses.

And behind them the palms appear as though they were

phantoms of jinn or shadows of sorcerers.

Ah, what ails this sea, so enraged, as though

the wind breathed through it from a rebel's breast?

It has engulfed the huts upon its rocks

and plunged them into its waves, roaring at one another.

And it fell upon their inhabitants, neither feeling pity

for them nor turning a seeing eye upon them.

And what ails me, that I seem to see the night above it,

fluttering like a bewildered phantom in the heavens?

Ah, where are its fishermen upon its shores,

roaming through its bays and islands,

and the valley's sailors, cloaking themselves in darkness

and singing the melodies of early spring?

They drowned in it, in the wake of their huts,

and found in its judgment no clemency from one with power.

And its surging waves shrouded them with the sea

and lodged them in its spacious graves.

Listen, O valley—is there no cry from you

whose echo resounds in the deepest recesses of the heart?

Do you know the night's secret, or are you unaware?

Yes, it is, O sea, the night of destinies!
