O Days, what do you do

with that burden which you bear?

You have been wronged, O Days; not even

the oppressed and cheated has sought your excuse.

    People blame you for what

the pen of the unseen has traced upon the brow.

And some have said: “She is indeed obsessed

with evil; her nature is base and accursed.”

You are an enemy to anyone betrayed

by fortune, though you are the helping friend.

Whoever erred in judgment has reviled you,

as though you were the one doing the thinking.

And whoever has acted badly in his life asks:

“How can you do ill and never do good?”

And the deeply misguided man has blamed you in his lifetime:

his manifest error comes from you, not him!

Even the man deprived in love—

as though you were the withholding beloved.

Yet you utter neither complaint nor sigh

at what your eyes see or what you hear.

You have felt people's weakness in a world

whose strong have no mercy on those made weak.

You have met their false rumors with kindness,

though weakness does not intercede for rumor-mongers.

And you, O Days, out of compassion

for them, pray and seek forgiveness.

    تولينَهُمْ من كَنزِهِ كلَّ حينْ

    And you, O Days, are contentment itself;

you give them from its treasure at every moment.

So from bitter colocynth, as from almond sweets [reading uncertain],

you pour sweetness into their lives.

And you make gentleness grow in souls

coarse and hard, that will not soften.

I am the one who knows what you do.

If I grow weary of the life you prolong,

you have what erases my torment, and what

stanches my tears, streaming and hot.

You have what enriches my cares, and what

heals my heart, bleeding and pierced.

You have what makes me feel at rest,

if affection is faithless to me and an oath betrays.

You have what grants me solace as redress,

if love wrongs me and longing deals unjustly.

But for you, I would not forget my mortality, nor

dream that I am immortal through the years.
