قرَّبتُI brought closer للنورِto the light المشعِّradiant عيونيmy eyes
ورفعتُand I raised للَّهبِtoward the flame الأحمِّblack جبينيmy brow
I brought my eyes close to the radiant light,
I brought my eyes closer to the shining light
And raised my brow toward the black flame.
And raised my forehead to the raging flames
ومشيتُand I walked فيin الواديthe valley يمزِّقtears صخرُهits rock
قدميmy foot، وتُدمِيand makes bleed الشائكاتُthe thorny plants يمينيmy right hand
And I walked in the valley, its rocks tearing
And walked in the valley with rocks tearing
My foot, while thorns made my right hand bleed.
My feet, and thorns bloodying my right hand
وعدوتُand I ran نحوtoward الماءِthe water وهوwhile it was مُقاربيnear me
فنأَىthen it receded وردَّand turned back إلىto السرابِthe mirage ظنونيmy conjectures
And I ran toward the water, which was near me,
And I raced towards the water but it receded
Then it receded and turned my thoughts back to the mirage.
And my assumptions retreated into a mirage
وبدَتْand appeared لعينيto my eye فيin السماءِthe sky غمامةٌa cloud
فوقفتُso I stopped، فارتدَّتْthen it turned back هنالكthere دونيshort of me
And a cloud appeared to my eye in the sky;
A cloud appeared in the sky before my eyes
So I stopped; there it turned back, short of me.
So I stopped, and there it stayed, away from me
وأصختُand I listened للنَّسماتto the breezes وهيwhile they were هوازجٌsinging
فسمعتُthen I heard قصفَthe crash of العاصفِthe storm المجنونِmad
And I listened to the breezes as they sang,
And I called to the gentle breezes
Then heard the crash of the mad storm.
And heard the clatter of the raging storm
ياO صبحُmorning: ماwhat is wrong للشمسwith the sun غيرَnot مضيئةٍshining
ياO ليلُnight: ماwhat is wrong للنجمwith the star غيرَnot مبينِvisible؟
O morning, why is the sun not shining?
O morning, the sun has nothing but brightness
O night, why is the star not visible?
O night, the stars have nothing but clarity
ياO نارُfire: ماwhat is wrong للنارِwith the fire بينbetween جوانحيmy ribs
ياO نورُlight: أينwhere النورُthe light ملءfilling جفونيmy eyelids؟
O fire, what ails the fire between my ribs?
O fire, between my breasts the fire has
O light, where is the light that filled my eyelids?
O light, where is the light filling my eyes?
ذهبَdeparted النهارthe day بحيرتيwith my bewilderment وكآبتيand my gloom
وأتىand came المساءُthe evening بأدمعيwith my tears وشجونيand my sorrows
Day departed with my bewilderment and gloom,
The day took my confusion and sorrow
And evening came with my tears and sorrows.
And evening brought my tears and lamentations
حتىeven الطبيعةnature أعرضتْturned away وتصاممتْand feigned deafness
وتنكرتْand turned cold للهاربِtoward the fugitive المسكينِwretched!!
Even nature turned away and feigned deafness,
Even nature turned away and was defiant
And turned cold toward the wretched fugitive.
And denied the wretched fugitive!
إنْif لمnot يكنbe ليfor me منfrom حنانِكَyour tenderness موئلٌa refuge
فلمنْthen to whom أبثُّI confide ضراعتيmy pleading وحنينيand my longing؟
If I have no refuge in your tenderness,
If I have no refuge in your affection
To whom, then, shall I confide my pleading and longing?
To whom do I voice my plea and longing?
آثرتyou chose ليfor me عيشَthe life of الأسيرِthe captive فلمbut not أُطِقْI could endure
صبرًاpatience وجُنَّand went mad منfrom الإسارِbondage جنونيmy madness
You chose a captive's life for me, but I could not endure
I chose the life of a captive but could not endure
Patiently, and bondage drove my madness wild.
Patience, and madness broke out of my captivity
فأعدتنيso you restored me طَلقَunfettered الجناحِof wing وخلتَand you thought بيin me
للنورfor the light جنَّةَthe madness of عاشقٍa lover مفتونِinfatuated
So you made me free-winged again, and thought I had
You gave me freedom of flight and left me
An infatuated lover's madness for the light.
To the garden of the enamored, obsessed with light
وأشرتَand you pointed ليto me نحوtoward السماءِthe sky فلمyet not أطرI flew
وردَدْتُand I returned عينَthe gaze of الطائرِthe bird المسجونِimprisoned
And you pointed me toward the sky, yet I did not fly,
And you pointed me to the sky but I did not fly
And answered with the gaze of a caged bird.
And returned the eye of the caged bird
نسيَit forgot السماءَthe sky وباتَand became يجهلُunaware of عالمًاa world
ألقىcast الحجابَthe veil عليهover it أسرُcaptivity of سنينِyears
It had forgotten the sky and no longer knew a world
Who forgot the sky and now does not know a world
Over which years of captivity had cast a veil.
Veiled from him by the captivity of years
ولقدand indeed مضىhas passed عهدُthe age of التنقلwandering، وانتهىand reached its end
زمنيmy lifetime إليكَto you بصبوتيwith my yearning وفتونيand my infatuation
Indeed, the age of wandering has passed, and my life has come
The time of wandering has passed, and my time
To you, with my yearning and infatuation.
To you in my youth and passion has ended
لمnot ألْقَI found بعدكَafter you ماanything that يشوقُdelights نواظريmy eyes
عندamong الرياضthe gardens، فليسَso there is not ماanything that يصبينيenchants me
After you, I found nothing to delight my eyes
After you I have not seen what captivates my sight
In the gardens; nothing there enchants me.
In the gardens, so nothing allures me
فهتفتُso I called out أستوحيseeking inspiration from قديمَthe old ملاحنيmy melodies
فتهدَّجَتْthen they quavered وتعثَّرتْand stumbled بأنينيwith my groaning
So I called out, seeking inspiration in my old melodies,
So I cried out to inspire my old melodies
But they quavered and stumbled over my groans.
But they staggered and stumbled in my laments
ونزلتُand I descended أستذريseeking shelter in الظلالَthe shadows فعِفْنَنِيbut they spurned me
حتىeven الغصونthe boughs غدونَthey became غيرnot غصونِboughs
And I descended, seeking shelter in the shadows, but they spurned me;
And I went down to beg the shadows but they choked me
Even the boughs were boughs no longer.
Until the branches were no longer branches
فرجعتُso I returned للوَكْرِto the nest القديمِold وبيand within me أسًىgrief
يطغىoverwhelms عليَّme وذِلَّةُand humiliation تعرُونيbesets me
So I returned to the old nest, with grief within me
So I returned to my old den, and in me there is sorrow
Overwhelming me, and humiliation laying hold of me.
Overflowing me, and humiliation baring me

When they saw it, my eyes filled with tears from
When it saw me, my eye turned moist
Pain, and my heart cried out after its stillness.
From pain, and the heart roared after tranquility
ومضَتْand went بيَwith me الذكرىmemory فرحتُso I began مُكَذِّبًاdisbelieving
عينيmy eye، ومتهمًاand doubting لديهِbefore it يقينيmy certainty
And memory bore me along, and I began to disbelieve
And memory flashed in me, so I denied, refuting
My eye, and to doubt my certainty before it.
My eye, and accusing my certainty of falsehood
وصحوتُand I awoke منfrom خَبَلٍdelirium وبيand within me مماfrom what أرىI see

إطراقُthe bowed head of مكتئبٍa despondent person، وصمتُand the silence of حزينِa sorrowful person
And I awoke from delirium; what I saw left me with
And I woke from dementia, and in me there is
The bowed head of the despondent, and the silence of the sorrowful.
The dejection of one depressed, and the silence of grief

So open for me the door you closed
So open for me the door which you closed
Against me, and bring the fetter without holding back.
Off from me, and bring the chain that does not chafe

Let me slake my heart with the wine of contentment,
Let me water the heart with the wine of acceptance
And lull my eyes to sleep upon the dawn of tenderness.
And sleep, at the dawn of affection, my eyes

قدhas آبَreturned منfrom سَفَرa journey through اللياليthe nights الجونِblack
And bring back to the bondage of ardent love a fugitive
And return me escaping to the captivity of my youth
Who has returned from a journey through the black nights,
Having passed from the journey of those passionate nights
عافَspurned الحياةَlife علىin نواكَseparation from you طليقةًunfettered

وأتاكَand came to you ينشدهاseeking it بعينِwith the eye of سجينِa prisoner!!
Who has spurned a free life apart from you,
It deserted life at your support, unfettered,
And come to you seeking it with a prisoner's eye.
And came to you seeking it with the eye of a captive!
