Beloved of my heart, it is fire—do not

kindle its blaze, nor stir it up.

Leave it, and do not awaken its embers,

for fire is no kinder than bitter frost.

A heart is ransom for your palms, finding sweetness

in the blazing fire's torment, for love of you.

Grant them the warmth of my tender lips,

and, in mercy, shield them from my sighs!

The cold has grown cruel! How? Can it be cruel to you?

And oh, how strange! How can the evening consent?

How often you came to it with the tenderest song,

and shone within it with heaven's inspiration!

O sister, what torment has overwhelmed

you, and what wasting anguish or misery?

I have pleaded with you: do not surrender

our entrusted treasures to death and oblivion!

For they are not mere ink that flowed,

nor, sister, are they mere paper,

    but the heart's innermost core,

and molten blackness and the light of the pupils,

and the dreams of a world and its longings

for two souls who, after anguish and exhaustion,

sought refuge in a grove, gazing upon

the evening's beauty and the enchantment of twilight!

I feel sorrow's sting in your heart,

and the flame of tears upon your cheeks.

And I hear the cry of one battling to the death,

with whom despair wrestles between the ribs.

And I glimpse beside the hearth

faces drawn by sorrow and humble awe,

    staring into it, bent

over it—oh, how the blaze terrifies!

    جِئْنَ بأجنحةٍ من ضياءْ

    They are surely your nights, or my memories;

they have come on wings of light.

They listened for your voice beneath the darkness,

so crossed the earth and folded up space.

    Their palms caress your hands

    with kisses from thirsty lips,

and they pour prayer into your ears,

and the light of hope into your tender heart.

O brides of the valley of imagination,

by the just deities of mercy,

ah, ward off this doom that rears its head,

    and restrain this weakened hand,

    and rescue this martyred love,

for the fire was about to swallow it.

    Letters—the noblest things ever penned

by love's hand, or echoed by a lip!

And preserve blossoms that never bloomed

upon the branches for any but lips,

nor breathed anything but love's spirit,

nor anything but its breath or fragrance.

Blossoms—they are visions of a night

that is a lifetime, or all of life.

Love envisioned it in a bouquet,

divine, gathered by his two hands.

O brides of the valley of imagination,

ah, send forth the spirit of contentment and peace!

Ah, judge between me and her

who rages against her love-distraught lover,

leaves him and prolongs their separation,

and asks him: “Where is love's pledge?”

And if he says, “You squandered it,” she rushes

to the fire, rousing the blaze within it.

O brides, will you not listen

to my sister, mistress of this poem?

Has a spirit ever sung with such purity,

and a heart echoed a song like this?

It says: “I am Love; do not cast me

into the fire: I am strong and mighty.

I am not mere ashes for it,

nor am I mere scattered debris.

I am the indivisible essence; my diamond does not

melt, nor does its light run out.

I was granted immortality, and I bestowed it

on whoever is inspired to poetry or recites it.

    Thrones collapse and suns fall,

yet I have my eternal, mighty throne.

It is the heart, the greatest thing fashioned

by God's hand, which no hand has rivaled.”

O brides of the valley of imagination,

ah, bring her hand closer, bring it closer!

Beloved of my heart, I have forgotten separation,

and the claims of the innocent woman and the guilty man.

And I was made to forget, till it was as though

what happened or befell me yesterday had never been!

The tale of the paper scrap has restored love

to my heart—so kindle it, or set it ablaze!
