Before your face, O Beauty, this whole universe

Is faces whose features overflow with joy.

And the world displays her wondrous arts,

And her many tongues give voice to your whispers.

But for you, night would not have surged with her cares,

    Nor would dawn's mouth have parted to reveal her smiles;

Nor would she have rejoiced in illusion in the realm of wishes,

    Nor suffered through love among her peers;

Nor bestowed on the artist the wonders of his art,

Nor would he have been granted creativity from her breaths.

You came early to the verdant garden, and there vied

To reach you, earth's roses with the blossoms of its plants.

And with the morning dew their lips laid

Upon your feet the sweetness of their kisses,

Yearning for footsteps that bring death, as though they

Would gain eternal life after their death.

And you turned toward the spreading trees, and among them burst forth

Songbirds; silence flew away from their nests.

And dawn's ray spread its purest light,

Greeting you, O son of dawn, from their treetops.

Alas, O Beauty, for that moment

That sends dreams reeling from their leaps!

And alas, O Beauty, for the parting

Whose scattered fragments imagination struggles to gather!

And it is nothing but silence, cold, and darkness,

And a world through whose reaches death spreads:

An expanse that eludes the wind amid its sobbing,

And there the owls finish their shrieking.

And flowers scatter from their branch-tips,

And verdant boughs are stripped of their leaves.

And the sky is shrouded by the gloom of every raincloud

Whose tears have furrowed the face of the earth.

There is neither the valley nor the world that

You knew, nor the days in their laughter,

But the death of the soul whose beloved you were,

And into whose words you breathed this magic.

She is gone, save for verse in which she immortalized her inspiration

To you; so take, O Beauty, the inspiration of her life!
