After five years you came to me, O my memories,

with hopes between death and life.

After five—what years among the years!

They bore all the sins of creation.

Within them Saturn cried out with darkness,

so they folded away my star and barred my paths,

and cast my circle into parting and dispersal,

while youth was intoxicated and love was willing.

So preserve them among the everlasting tragedies,

or leave them, and recall for me my passing thoughts.

Return some of my dreams to me, and bring

the purity of my melodies, and restore my ringing songs.

Tell of the night we ventured onto the White Nile,

in a stillness I feared might pulse,

and darkness like wrath after contentment.

    We had asked its star to close its eyes;

terror crouched upon it, and it bared

black depths and an oppressive shadow.

    Whenever a matchstick flashed,

it drove the Nile, foamed, and swept on,

warning the passengers, who surged about, running.

And a malicious one among them claimed, insinuating,

    that an ill-intentioned Hitlerite star

had blazed with fire and vanished into space.

My memories, how did you come to me?

How did you cross the land and the far-off sea?

How did you plunge through the universe, a bloody deep,

and a fierce blaze of raging fire?

    My memories, renew this rhyme,

and revive it as a sweet, poignant melody.

    بل عجيبٌ أنني لا زلتُ حيَّا

    It is no wonder that you return it to me;

rather, the wonder is that I am still alive,

receiving you, my cup in my hands,

and my song pleading on my lips.

Your singer circled me, calling me for a long while:

O sailor, the time has come—come along!

The time has come to unfurl the fluttering sail.

O my ship, ah! Come, do not be afraid!

The sea has drawn near after being beyond reach,

and Venice is now an arm's length away.

    This paradise—woe to the serpents!

They breathed the poison of deceit into its flowers!

Ah, spare me tales of strife.

My life is lost! Alas for a wasted life!

So seek a chance for love and pleasure

beneath a singing horizon, clear in its radiance.

O my sail, roam through those regions,

and prepare for meeting and farewell!

O sea! What has befallen my ship?

A faint sound has rocked her, its echo tender.

And has it truly drawn near its end—

this ordeal—and has its darkness lifted?

Will the world tomorrow welcome its wishes,

free, singing the hidden depths of its love?

And shall I see a freedom whose sanctuary is inviolable,

for which those who died in sacrifice have not lost their final reward?

O East, look closely! Do you see it?

You are among its circles—where is its radiance?

You defended it and went ahead of its steps

on the day they said, 'Its young champion has lost the war!'

What glad tidings did the most melodious tune herald?

Who do you think that singing apparition is?

His voice touched my heart as it touched my ear.

Is it for love, or for peace, or a wish?

O herald of peace, may my hope not belie you.

I thirst for song, so give me more.

The five years passed over me in silence and sorrow.

Through what five years will my life stretch after these?

My heart cried: 'If you abandon me, you are not of me.

Open the door and remove the shackle from me.

Ah, let me see the world—let me!

Today I have tired of my prison in my own land!'

Why should I remain in one place—why should I remain!

Here is the dawn—rise, my friends!

    اِفتحوها لأرى لونَ السماءِ

    Open my window onto the open sky;

open it so I may see the sky's color

in the shade of peace or the light of serenity.

My lyre has yearned for my poetry and song.

So seek me among the waves of light,

and seek a meeting with me above the lakes.

Do not say: 'How can he complain of staying,

a poet in a homeland so fair to behold?'

You have wronged my plea, my friends,

and failed to understand what the life of poets is!

O daughter of the Isar, greetings of peace to you,

    and love—no reproach, no blame.

This war that terrified with its blaze

was kindled by a tyrant who settled in your valley.

In exile you tasted longing and sickness.

Do you think Egypt was not a pleasant dwelling?

Egypt has always, for those who love her,

kept her pledges and never violated a bond.

So remember tomorrow some noble loved ones,

if memory of her visits you fleetingly,

and remember some of her nights of old

on banks that bore away your lovesick longing.

On banks where everything is beautiful,

they make love sprout, nurture it, and bestow it.

Dawn and late afternoon glide over them

    among willows, poplars, and palms.

    scattering blossoms along every path.

And Osiris, on the shaded shore,

    presses wine and pours Salsabil.

This is Egypt, her dwellings and her people!

Does she have an equal in this world?

How strange I am, and strange is what I say!

How can departure call me away from her tomorrow?
