Traveler through the air, what a wing you command!

And what heights and plains you have reached!

And in whatever region you settle, I

Find you leaping and rushing unrestrained.

In every morning haunt lies the trail of your skirts,

And your footsteps show at every evening retreat.

You flow, linking cities and villages,

Then outstrip them toward a vast expanse.

No lightning travels where you have traveled, nor has

An eagle winged its way to what you sought.

The male ostrich stumbles—how can its speed compare with yours?

And the sleek, fleet horse's strength is spent.

You press on; no obstacles stand in your way,

And you pass between hard rock and stone slabs.

Near at hand, yet no eyes have caught your form

Ever; nor have palms touched your hands.

Forms sway when you glide among them,

And the swaying of forms is born of joy.

You shake the great trees of gardens, and they bend,

Those towering trees, in longing for you.

But for you, the clouds would not pour out their springs,

Watering the plains with a torrential downpour.

But for you, the hills would not bloom in patterned fabric

Of woven stock blossoms and embroidered daisies.

You are life's cup, a draught more precious

Than the choicest mellow wine in goblets.

    واهْتِفْ بِصَوْتِ الطَائِرِ الصَدَّاحِ

    Go on, O air, for you are the gentlest mount;

Sing out in the voice of the melodious bird.

Guard the magic of eloquence and its inspiration,

And be gentle with eloquent verses of poetry.

They have gathered rhymes from dew-fresh flowers,

Captivating minds with their wafting fragrance.

Flawless pearls—if measured against their like,

The glittering stars of night would seem flawed.

A sword in the hand of a man whose heart is frightened is not

Like a sword in a valiant young man's hand.

Poetry comes from heaven's mystery; its whisper

Is the inspiration of souls and the repose of spirits.

Wine's qualities are perfected in its raptures,

Yet it escapes, unstained by the sin of wine.

Go swiftly, O poetry, to the Arab world,

And alight in its far reaches and regions.

And blend a greeting into the musky ether

For generous tribes with proudly lifted noses.

They begrudged noble virtues bearing anyone but themselves,

Yet they are never sparing in heroic aid.

From classical Arabic and its wonders they have made

A lineage bright as the sunlit day.

The letter ḍād unites them and mends their rift,

    Alike in joys and sorrows.

Have set myself free in pursuit of distant hope.

Love of Arabhood has coursed through my joints,

    Despite my reproacher's idle talk.

O Broadcasting House, you are three years old,

Which have passed like a flash of gleaming lightning.

How many a reciter's Quranic chant within you

Sounds sweet at evening and at dawn!

So it turns toward the Creator, the Opener.

Religion is the soul's solace in its pain,

And its healer of tears and wounds.

I entrusted my sorrow to it; it was not stirred

By complaint, nor did it cleave the darkness with wailing.

O Broadcasting House, how much culture you have spread,

    Whose merits are beyond expression!

How many brimming seas your voice has crossed,

And vast wastelands with rugged passes!

You have become the teacher of nations, and

Your whisper has fought ignorance's army—what a battle!

Is at every turn and in the heart of every square.

The world eagerly takes in your words, just as

The righteous receive the revelation of the Revealer.

O Broadcasting House, you are the merriest grove

That sang aloud and became a grove of joys.

Your lovely nightingales sang out, eclipsing

The loud-singing nightingale's voice in the air.

From every songstress, as though her yearning were

The whisper of hopes to the despairing toiler.

The night, when she calls to it, sways from side to side,

So you see it between rapture and sobriety.

How much diversion in you quenches the mind's thirst,

    And well-loved humor and jest!

The soul tires when its serious pursuits drag on,

So ease the tedium of its work with permitted pleasure.

    O bands of youth, I have a well-wisher's reproach,

If only you would heed sincere advisers' counsel.

Through knowledge Marconi climbed to the heights,

And through the resolve of one who leaps and aspires.

A man of self-made lineage, who gained no

    Glory through Amun or Ptah.

The world looks up to him, and

The memory of his deeds rides the backs of winds.

Boasting of the past is but an excuse,

And ignorance erases firmly rooted glory.

Knowledge is life's lamp, so search—

    Before you leap—for the lamp.

    والآنَ صارَ الْعِلْمُ خَيْرَ سِلاحِ

    Weapons have worn out with the past and its era;

And now knowledge has become the finest weapon.

    Today, a scientist's idea in a factory

Takes the place of swords and spears,

    And repels every surging battalion,

Green-dark and massive, hurling forth armored warriors.

Carry your efforts forward; be devoted to your country.

In effort and devotion lies all success.

One cannot expect, from a nation infatuated

With amusement and procrastination, any success.

Plunge into hardships and do not tire; for

Hopes are attained through patience and persistence.

The deep may save a drowning man by casting him

Alive, only for him to meet death in the shallows.

So come to production and reform.

And your king is a model of youth, adorned

    With virtues radiant-faced and fair.

The faithful Nile sees hope in his reign,

And in the auspicious appearance of his radiant face.

His virtues have journeyed, and following them

My praises have journeyed, singing of his ample bounty.
