أَبْصَرْتُI saw أَعْمَىa blind man فِيin الضَّبَابِthe fog بِلَنْدَنٍin London
يَمْشِيhe walks فَلَاand does not يَشْكُوcomplain وَلَاnor يَتَأَوَّهُgroan
I saw a blind man in the fog in London,
I saw a blind man in the fog in London
Walking, neither complaining nor groaning.
Walking without complaining or moaning
فَأَتَاهُthen he came to him يَسْأَلُهُasking him الْهِدَايَةَguidance مُبْصِرٌa sighted man
حَيْرَانُbewildered يَخْبِطُhe stumbles فِيin الظَّلَامِthe darkness وَيَعْمَهُand wanders blindly
Then a sighted man came to him, asking for guidance,
A seeing man came asking him for guidance
Bewildered, stumbling in the darkness and wandering blindly.
Lost, groping in the darkness, blinded
فَاقْتَادَهُthen he led him الْأَعْمَىthe blind man فَسَارَso he walked وَرَاءَهُbehind him
أَنَّىwherever تَوَجَّهَturned خَطْوُهُhis steps يَتَوَجَّهُhe turns
So the blind man led him, and he walked behind him;
The blind man led him and he walked behind
Wherever his steps turned, he too would turn.
Wherever his steps went, he followed
وَهُنَاand here بَدَاappeared الْقَدَرُFate الْمُعَرْبِدُriotous ضَاحِكًاlaughing
وَمَضَىand passed الضَّبَابُthe fog وَلَاand does not يَزَالُcease يُقَهْقِهُhe guffaws!
And here riotous Fate appeared, laughing,
And here fate laughed out loud
And the fog lifted, yet Fate still roared with laughter!
The fog lifted, but kept on chuckling
