فَعُقبىfor the outcome of كُلُّevery خافِقَةٍgust سُكونُstillness
When your winds blow, make the most of them.
When the winds of fortune favor you, seize them as they blow,
If your winds blow, then seize the opportunity,
For every gust ends in stillness.
For after every tempest comes a calm.
For the aftermath of every gust is stillness.
وَلاand do not تَغفَلneglect عَنِconcerning الإِحسانِdoing good فيهاduring them
فَماfor ... not تَدريyou know السُكونُthe stillness مَتىwhen يَكونُit will come
And do not neglect doing good while they blow.
Neglect not kindness during prosperous days,
And do not neglect doing good while they last,
For you do not know when stillness will come.
You know not when calms may end and storms begin.
For you never know when the stillness will strike.
وَإِنand if دَرَّتyield milk نِياقُكَyour she-camels فَاِحتَلِبهاthen milk them
فَماfor ... not تَدريyou know الفَصيلُthe camel calf لِمَنto whom يَكونُit will belong
And if your she-camels yield milk, then milk them.
If the reins of good luck fall into your hands, grasp them tight,
And if your she-camels flow with milk, then milk them,
For you do not know to whom the camel calf will belong.
Who knows to whom fortune’s steed may later run?
For you do not know to whom the young calf will belong.
إِذاwhen ظَفِرَتhave prevailed يَداكَyour two hands فَلاthen do not تَقصِّرfall short
فَإِنَّfor indeed الدَهرَtime عادَتَهُits habit يَخونُit betrays
When your hands prevail, do not fall short.
When success is yours, do not fall short in zeal,
If your hands grasp victory, do not hold back,
For time's habit is to betray.
For fortune is accustomed to betraying men.
For it is the habit of Time to betray.
