لِلنّاسِfor people حِرصٌeagerness عَلىfor الدُنياthis world بِتَدبيرِthrough planning
وَصَفوُهاand its serenity لَكَfor you مَمزوجٌmingled بَتَكديرِwith distress
People eagerly pursue this world through planning;
People have a greed for this world and its gains
People harbor greed for the world with endless scheming,
And its serenity for you is mingled with distress.
Though its pleasure for you is mixed with pains
Yet its purity is forever mixed with murkiness.
كَمhow many مِنof مُلِحٍّa persistent seeker عَلَيهاin pursuit of it لاnot تُساعِدُهُit favors him
وَعاجِزٍand an incapable person نالَobtained دُنياهُhis worldly share بِتَقصيرِwith little effort
How many a persistent seeker of it finds it does not favor him,
How many worthy men it does not aid
How many persist in its pursuit, yet it aids them not,
While an incapable man has gained his worldly share with little effort.
And weaklings gain their worldly goods with little pains
While the incompetent attains his fortune despite his negligence.
لَمnot يُرزَقوهاthey were granted it بِعَقلٍthrough intellect حينماwhen رُزِقواthey were provided for
لَكِنَّهُمbut they رُزِقوهاthey were granted it بِالمقاديرِby fate's decrees
They were not granted it through intellect when they were provided for;
They were not granted it by their wisdom when granted
They were not granted provision based on intellect when they were endowed,
But they were granted it by fate's decrees.
But it was granted by divine ordains
But rather, they were granted it through divine decrees.
لَوif كانَit were عَنthrough قُوَّةٍstrength أَوor مُغالَبَةٍoverpowering others
طارَwould fly off البُزاةُthe hawks بِأَرزاقِwith the sustenance of العَصافيرِthe sparrows
If it came through strength or overpowering others,
Had it been by power or efforts impelling
If it were a matter of strength or forceful conquest,
The hawks would fly off with the sparrows' sustenance.
Vagabonds would have taken the birds' grains
The falcons would have flown off with the sustenance of the sparrows.
وَلُقمَةٌand a morsel بِجَريشِwith coarse grains of الملِحِsalt آكُلُهاI eat it
أَحَبُّdearer مِنthan لُقمَةٍa morsel تُحشىis stuffed بِزَنبورِwith a wasp
And a morsel I eat with coarsely ground salt
A morsel with salt is dearer to its eater
A single morsel eaten with coarse salt
Is dearer to me than a morsel stuffed with a wasp.
Than a sumptuous feast that is filled with disdains
Is dearer to me than a morsel stuffed with a hornet.
كَمhow many لُقمَةٍa morsel جَلَبَتbrought حَتفاًdeath لِصاحِبِهاto its owner
كَحَبَةِlike a grain of القَمحِwheat دَقَّتbroke عُنقَthe neck of عَصفورِa sparrow
How many a morsel has brought death to its owner,
How many a morsel brought death to its taker
How often has a bite brought doom to its owner,
Like a grain of wheat that broke a sparrow's neck.
Like a grain of wheat that cracked a sparrow's brains
Like the grain of wheat that snapped the sparrow's neck.
