سَلامٌpeace عَلىupon أَهلِthe dwellers of القُبورِthe graves الدَوارِسِtimeworn
كَأَنَّهُمas though they لَمdid not يَجلِسواthey sit فيin المَجالِسِthe gatherings
Peace be upon the dwellers of the timeworn graves,
Peace be upon the people of the whirling graves
Peace be upon the dwellers of fading graves,
As though they had never sat in gatherings,
As if they never sat in gatherings
As though they never sat within the gathering halls,
وَلَمand did not يَشرَبواthey drink مِنof بارِدِcool الماءِthe water شُربَةًa draught
وَلَمand did not يَأكُلواthey eat مِنof خَيرِthe best of رَطبٍmoist وَيابِسِand dry
Nor drunk a draught of cool water,
Nor drank a draught of cool water
Nor ever drank a single sip of cool water,
Nor eaten the choicest food, moist and dry.
Nor ate any fresh or dried dates
Nor ate from the bounty of fresh or dried provisions,
أَلاcome now خَبِّرونيtell me أَينَwhere قَبرthe grave of ذَليلِكُمyour lowly one
وَقَبرُand the grave of العَزيزِthe mighty one الباذِخِthe haughty one المُتنافِسِthe one who vies with others
Come, tell me: where is the grave of your lowly one,
Tell me, where is the grave of your outcast
Come, tell me: where is the grave of the lowly among you,
And the grave of the mighty, haughty one who vied with others?
And the towering, competing dignitary's grave
And the grave of the mighty, the proud, the ambitious rival?
