أَفاطِمَO Fatima هاكِtake this السَيفَthe sword غَيرnot ذَميمِblameworthy
فَلَستُfor I am not بَرَعديدٍa trembling coward وَلاnor بِلَئيمِa base man
O Fatima, take the sword, free from reproach.
Afatema, wave that sword which is not blunt
O Fatimah, take this sword, for it is not to be blamed,
For I am no trembling coward, nor a base man.
For I am neither weak nor cowardly
For I am neither a trembling coward nor base of character.
أَفاطِمَO Fatima قَدindeed أَبلَيتُI fought valiantly فيin نَصرِsupport of أَحمَدٍAhmad
وَمَرضاةُand the pleasure of رَبٍّa Lord بِالعِبادِtoward the servants رَحيمِmerciful
O Fatima, I have fought valiantly in support of Ahmad,
Afatema, I have exerted myself in supporting Ahmad
O Fatimah, I have truly tested myself in the aid of Ahmad,
and for the pleasure of a Lord merciful to His servants.
And pleasing a Lord who is Kind to His servants
And for the pleasure of a Lord who is Merciful to His servants.
أُريدُI desire ثَوابَthe reward of اللَهِGod لاno شَيءَthing غَيرَهُother than it
وَرِضوانَهُand His good pleasure فيin جَنّةٍParadise وَنَعيمِand bliss
I desire God's reward, nothing else,
I want only God's reward and nothing else
I desire the reward of God—nothing other than that—
and His good pleasure in Paradise and bliss.
And His approval in a Garden and Bliss
And His good pleasure amidst Paradise and bliss.
وَكُنتُand I was اِمرَءاًa man أَسمواI rise high إِذاwhen الحَربُwar شَمَّرتdrew up its skirts
وَقامَتand stood عَلىupon ساقٍa leg بِغَيرِwithout being مَليمِblameworthy
And I was a man who rose high when war drew up its skirts,
And I was a man they called on when war raged
For I was a man who stands tall when war bares its fangs
and stood upon its leg, with no blame upon me.
And rose on a leg without hesitation
And rises to its full height, free from any reproach.
اَنِمتَyou put to sleep اِبنَson of عَبدِʿAbd (servant of) الدارِal-Dār (the house) حَتّىuntil ضَرَبتَهُyou struck him
بِذيwith one possessing رَونَقٍluster يَفريcleaves العِظامَthe bones صَميمِsolid
You lulled Ibn ʿAbd al-Dār to sleep until you struck him
You slept, son of Abdel Dar, until I struck you
I laid low the son of Abd al-Dar when I struck him
with a gleaming, solid blade that cleaves bones.
With a polished sword that shreds bones to pieces
With a gleaming blade that cleaves through solid bone.
فَغادَرتُهُso I left him بِالقاعِon the plain فَاِرفَضَّso scattered جَمعُهُhis host
وَأَشفَيتُand I soothed مِنهُمfrom them صَدرَthe breast of كُلِّevery حَليمِforbearing man
So I left him on the plain, and his host scattered,
I left him in the battlefield as his army scattered
I left him upon the plain, and his forces scattered,
and at their expense I soothed every forbearing man's breast.
And relieved the chest of every wise man
And thus I healed the hearts of all the forbearing ones.
وَسَيفيand my sword بِكفِّيin my palm كَالشِهابِlike a meteor أَهُزُّهُI brandish it
أَجزُّI shear off بِهِwith it مِنfrom عاتِقٍa shoulder وَصَميمِand solid bone
And my sword in my palm is like a meteor as I brandish it;
And my sword in my hand flashes like a meteor
My sword in my hand is like a meteor as I brandish it,
I shear with it through shoulder and solid bone.
With which I sever shoulders and cores
Shearing through shoulders and vital cores alike.
