لاdo not تَخضَعَنَّever submit لِمَخلوقٍto a created being عَلىin طَمَعٍhope of gain
فَإِنَّfor indeed ذَلِكَthat وَهنٌweakness مِنكَon your part فيin الدينِfaith
Never submit to a created being in hope of gain.
Do not submit to any creature out of greed
Do not humble yourself before a creature out of greed,
For that is weakness in your faith.
For that is a weakness in religion from you
For that is surely a weakness in your faith.
وَاَستَرزِقِand seek sustenance اللَهَGod مِمّاfrom what فيin خَزائِنِهِHis treasuries
فَإِنَّماfor only الأَمرُthe command بَينَbetween الكافِthe letter kāf وَالنونِand the letter nūn
And ask God for sustenance from what is in His treasuries.
And seek provision from Allah of what is in His treasuries
And seek your sustenance from God, from what lies in His treasuries,
For the command lies only between the letters kāf and nūn.
For the matter is only between the "K" and the "N"
For the command stands solely between the Kaf and the Nun.
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one whom أَنتَyou تَرجوهُlook to him with hope وَتَأمَلُهُand place your hopes in him
مِنَamong البَرِيَّةِcreated beings مِسكينُa needy man اِبنُson مِسكينِa needy man
Indeed, the one you look to and place your hopes in
Indeed, that which you hope for and anticipate
Indeed, the one upon whom you place your hope and expectation,
Among created beings is a needy man, son of a needy man.
From people is a poor son of a poor person
Is, among mortals, but a pauper, the son of a pauper.
ماhow أَحسَنَbeautiful الجودgenerosity فيin الدُنياworldly life وَفيand in الدينِfaith
وَأَقبَحand how ugly البُخلmiserliness فيمَنin one who صِيغَwas fashioned مِنfrom طينِclay
How beautiful is generosity in worldly life and in faith!
How good is generosity in worldly life and in religion
How beautiful is generosity in worldly life and in religion,
And how ugly is miserliness in one fashioned from clay!
And how ugly is stinginess in one formed from clay
And how ugly is miserliness in one molded from clay.
ماhow أَحسَنَbeautiful الدينfaith وَالدُنياand worldly life إِذاwhen اِجتَمَعاthe two come together
لاmay ... not باركَbless اللَهُGod فيin دُنياworldly life بِلاwithout دينِfaith
How beautiful are faith and worldly life when they come together!
How good are religion and worldly life when they come together
How excellent are faith and worldly fortune when they unite,
May God grant no blessing to worldly life without faith!
May Allah not bless a worldly life without religion
May God grant no blessing to a world devoid of faith.
لَوif كانَwere بِاللُّبِthrough intellect يَزدادُincreases اللَبيبُthe wise man غِنىًin wealth
لَكانَthen would be كُلُّevery لَبيبٍwise man مِثلlike قارونِQarun
If the wise man grew richer through intellect,
If intelligence increased wealth
If the intelligent man grew rich by virtue of his wits,
Then every wise man would be like Qarun.
Every intelligent person would be like Qarun
Then every man of sense would be like Qarun.
لَكِنَّماbut الرِزقُsustenance بِالميزانِby the scales مِنfrom حَكَمٍa Judge
يُعطيgives اللَبيبَthe wise man وَيُعطيand gives كُلَّevery مَأفونِfool
But sustenance is weighed out by a Judge,
But provision is by a scale of wisdom
But provision is dispensed by the scales of a Sovereign Judge,
Who gives to the wise man and gives to every fool.
He gives to the intelligent and gives to every worthless person
Who gives to the wise man and gives to every fool.
