واصبر ففي الصّبر عند الضّيقِ متَّسعُ

Never lose heart when a calamity befalls you.

Do not despair when calamity befalls you,

Do not give way to despair when a calamity befalls you,

And be patient, for in patience amid distress there is room for relief.

And be patient, for in patience during hardship there is room.

And be patient, for in patience amidst distress there is relief.

إن الكريمَ إذا نابتهُ نائبةٌ

إن الكريمَ إذا نابتهُ نائبةٌ

لَم يَبدُ مِنهُ عَلى عِلّاتِهِ الهَلَعُ

لَم يَبدُ مِنهُ عَلى عِلّاتِهِ الهَلَعُ

Indeed, when a calamity befalls a noble person,

Indeed when misfortune visits the noble one,

Indeed, the noble soul, when misfortune assails him,

No panic appears in him, despite his afflictions.

He does not display, despite his troubles, agitation.

Shows no sign of panic, despite his plight.
