أَصبَحتَ مُكتَئِباً تَبكي كَمَحزونِ
Is it from recalling an untrustworthy age
With remembrance of an uncertain past, you've grown sad and weep in sorrow
Is it from remembering an age fraught with peril,
that you have become dejected, weeping like one grief-stricken?
Or is it from recalling foolish people
That you have become despondent, weeping like the sorrowful?

يَغشَونَ بِالظُلمِ مَن يَدعو إِلى الدينِ
Or from recalling people possessed of folly,
Who with injustice oppress those calling to the faith
Or from remembering a people of foolish nature,
who unjustly assail whoever calls to the faith?
Never ceasing lewdness if left unharmed
Who cover with oppression those who call to the Faith?

وَالغَدرُ فيهُم سَبيلٌ غَيرُ مَأمونِ
They do not desist from shameful deeds as long as they remain unharmed,
And treachery being their uncontrolled path
They do not cease from indecency so long as they remain safe,
and treachery among them is an unsafe path.
Do you not see God has diminished your best
And treachery among them is a path offering no security.
أَلاdo ... not? تَرَونَyou see أَقَلَّmay diminish اللَهُGod خَيرَكُمُyour blessings

أَنَّا غَضِبنا لِعُثمانَ بنَ مَظعونِ
Do you not see—may God diminish your blessings—
For we grew angry at Uthman ibn Maz'oon
Do you not see—may God diminish your fortunes—
that we grew angry on behalf of Uthman ibn Maz'un,
When they insult without fear of consequence
That we have risen in anger for the sake of Uthman ibn Maz'un?

when they slap him and show no concern for his eye,
Stabbing, hitting, striking without remorse
When they strike his face, having no dread for his eye,
with thrusts in swift succession and blows that are not feeble?
So He will repay them, if not killed first
With successive thrusts and blows that do not falter,
فَسَوفَso ... will يَجزيهُمُhe repays them إِنif لَمnot يَمُتhe dies عَجَلاًsoon

So he will repay them, if he does not die soon,
Measure for measure an uncheated recompense
For he shall repay them, if he does not die in haste,
measure for measure, a recompense without shortfall.
Measure for measure, a retribution undiminished.
