إِنَّindeed المَكارِمَnoble virtues أَخلاقٌqualities of character مُطَهَرةٌpurified
فَالدّينُso religion أَوَلُّهاtheir first وَالعَقلُand reason ثانيهاtheir second
Indeed, noble virtues are pure qualities of character.
Noble virtues are purified morals
Truly, noble virtues are traits of purity,
So religion is their first, and reason their second.
Religion is the first, reason comes next
Faith is the first of them, and reason is the second,
وَالعِلمُand knowledge ثالِثُهاtheir third وَالحِلمُand forbearance رابِعَهاtheir fourth
وَالجودُand generosity خامِسُهاtheir fifth وَالفَصلُand discernment ساديهاtheir sixth
And knowledge is their third, and forbearance their fourth.
Knowledge is the third, forbearance the fourth
Knowledge is the third, and forbearance is the fourth,
And generosity is their fifth, and discernment their sixth.
Generosity is the fifth, justice the sixth
Generosity is the fifth, and discernment is the sixth,
وَالبِرُّand righteousness سابِعُهاtheir seventh وَالصَبرُand patience ثامِنُهاtheir eighth
وَالشُكرُand gratitude تاسِعُهاtheir ninth وَاللَينُand gentleness باقيهاthe remaining one among them
And righteousness is their seventh, and patience their eighth.
Righteousness is the seventh, patience the eighth
Righteousness is the seventh, and patience is the eighth,
And gratitude is their ninth, and gentleness the remaining one.
Gratitude is the ninth, gentleness remains
Gratitude is the ninth, and gentleness completes them.
وَالنَفسُand the soul تَعلَمknows أَنّيthat I لاnot أُصادِقُهاI befriend it
وَلَستُand I am not أَرشُدُI act rightly إِلاexcept حينَwhen أَعصيهاI disobey it
And the soul knows that I do not befriend it.
My soul knows I do not speak the truth to it
The soul knows well that I do not take it for a friend,
And I act rightly only when I disobey it.
I advise only when I disobey it
And that I find no right guidance save when I disobey it.
وَالعَينُand the eye تَعلَمُknows مِنfrom عَينَيthe two eyes of مُحدِّثِهاthe one speaking to it
إِنwhether كانَhe is مِنof حِزبِهاits party أَوor مَنone who يُعاديهاopposes it
And the eye knows, from the eyes of the one speaking to it,
My eyes know from their talkative pair
The eye discerns, from the eyes of the one who speaks,
whether he belongs to its party or is one who opposes it.
If they are allies or hostile rivals
Whether he is of its party or one who holds enmity.
عَيناكَyour two eyes قَدindeed دَلَّتاboth pointed out عَينايmy two eyes مِنكَabout you عَلىto
أَشياءَthings لَولاهُماwere it not for them both ماnot كُنتَyou were تُبديهاyou disclose them
Your two eyes have pointed out to mine, about you,
Your eyes have guided mine about you
Your eyes have signaled to my own, regarding you,
things you would not disclose were it not for them.
To things I'd not have known without their sight
Things that, were it not for them, you never would have shown.
