إِنّيindeed I عَجِزتُhave faltered عَجزَةًa single lapse لاnot أَعتَذِرI offer an excuse
سَوفَshall أَكيسُI act shrewdly بَعدَهاafter it وَاَستَمِرand I press on
Indeed, I have faltered once; I offer no excuse.
I have failed, and fail without excuse;
I have faltered with a failure for which I offer no excuse,
I shall act shrewdly afterward and press on.
afterwards binding up my wounds I shall go on.
Hereafter, I shall grow astute and persevere,
أَرفَعُI lift مِنfrom ذَيلِيَmy hem ماwhat كُنتَyou were (context suggests: I was) أَجُرI drag
وَأَجمَعُand I gather الأَمرَthe affair الشَتيتَscattered المُنتَشِرdispersed
I lift from my hem what I used to drag.
I shall roll up what I once let trail in the dust,
I lift the trailing hem I once allowed to drag,
And gather together the scattered, dispersed affairs.
and unfurl the banner waving in the wind.
And gather my affairs, now scattered and dispersed,
إِنif لَمnot يُباغتنيtakes me by surprise العَجولُthe hasty one المُنتَصِرthe victorious one
أَوor تَترُكونيyou (plural) abandon me وَالسِلاحُand the weapons يَبتَدِرrush forward
If the hasty victor does not take me by surprise,
If the rash conqueror does not hurry upon me,
Unless the Swift Conqueror takes me by surprise,
Or you abandon me while weapons rush forward.
nor leave me while still I grasp my arms.
Or you abandon me as weapons rush to strike.
