أَماindeed وَاللَهُby God إِنَّindeed الظُلمَinjustice شُؤمٌan evil omen
وَلاand not زالَceased المُسيءُthe evildoer هُوَhe الظَلومُthe habitual oppressor
Indeed, by God, injustice is an evil omen.
By God, injustice is indeed a dark omen,
And the evildoer is ever the oppressor.
And the transgressor remains ever the tyrant.
إِلىto الديّانِthe Judge يَومُthe Day of الدينِJudgment نَمضيwe go
وَعِندَand before اللَهِGod تَجتَمِعُwill gather الخُصومُthe disputants
To the Judge we go on the Day of Judgment.
To the Supreme Judge on the Day of Judgment we proceed,
And before God the disputants will gather.
And in the presence of God shall all adversaries gather.
سَتَعلَمُyou will know فيat الحِسابِthe reckoning إِذاwhen الِتَقَيناwe meet
غَداًtomorrow عِندَbefore المَليكِthe Sovereign مَنِwho الغَشومُthe ruthless oppressor
You will know at the reckoning, when we meet
You will surely know at the Reckoning, when we meet
Tomorrow before the Sovereign, who the ruthless oppressor is.
Tomorrow before the Sovereign, who the true oppressor is.
سَتَنقَطِعُwill cease اللِذاذَةُpleasure عَنfrom أُناسٍsome people
مِنof الدُنياthis world وَتَنقَطِعand will cease الهُمومُcares
Pleasure will cease for some people
All worldly pleasures shall be cut off from men,
Of this world, and cares will cease.
Just as their sorrows, too, shall be cut off.
لِأَمرٍfor a purpose ماsome تَصَرَّفَتِhave turned اللَياليthe nights
لِأَمرٍfor a purpose ماsome تَحَرَّكَتِhave moved النُجومُthe stars
For some purpose the nights have turned;
Not without purpose have the nights revolved,
For some purpose the stars have moved.
Not without purpose have the stars moved in their courses.
سَلِask الأَيّامَthe days عَنabout أُمَمٍnations تَقَضَّتhave passed away
سَتُخبِرُكَwill tell you المَعالِمُthe landmarks وَالرُسومُand the traces
Ask the days about nations that have passed away;
Ask the days concerning nations long passed;
The landmarks and traces will tell you.
The standing ruins and faded traces will give you answer.
تَرومُyou seek الخُلدَimmortality فيin دارِthe abode of المَناياdeath
فَكَمfor how many قَدalready رامَsought مِثلَكَlike you ماwhat تَرومُyou seek
You seek immortality in the abode of death;
Do you seek immortality in the Abode of Death?
For how many like you have sought what you seek!
How many before you have sought exactly what you seek!
تَنامُyou sleep وَلَمand not تَنَمhas slept عَنكَconcerning you المَناياdeath
تَنبَّهawaken لِلمَنِّيَةِto death ياO نُؤومُheavy sleeper
You sleep, yet death keeps vigil over you.
You sleep, yet Death does not sleep in seeking you;
Awaken to death, O heavy sleeper!
Awake to your fate, O heavy sleeper!
لَهَوتَyou were distracted عَنِfrom الفَناءِpassing away وَأَنتَwhile you تَفنىare perishing
فَماfor no شَيءٌthing مِنَof الدُنياthis world يَدومُendures
You have been heedless of passing away, even as you perish;
You distract yourself from the void while you are fading into it,
For nothing of this world endures.
For there is nothing in this world that endures.
تَموتُyou will die غَداًtomorrow وَأَنتَwhile you are قَريرُat ease عَينٍof eye
مِنَof الفَضَلاتِthe waste فيin لُجَحٍunclear; possibly 'depths' تَعومُyou swim
You will die tomorrow, your eyes at ease,
You will die tomorrow, yet you remain content of eye,
Swimming in depths of waste (the word for 'depths' is uncertain).
Swimming in the deep seas of your own excess.
