رَأَيتُI saw المُشرِكينَthe polytheists بَغَواthey acted unjustly عَلَيناagainst us
وَلَجّواand they persisted stubbornly فيin الغِوايَةِwaywardness وَالضَلالِand error
I saw the polytheists act unjustly against us,
I saw the polytheists transgress against us
I saw that the idolaters had transgressed against us,
And they persisted stubbornly in waywardness and error.
And delve into misguidance and error
And persisted obstinately in their error and waywardness,
وَقالواand they said نَحنُwe أَكثَرُmore numerous إِذwhen نَفَرناwe marched forth
غَداةَon the morning of الرَوعِterror بِالأسلِwith the spears الطِوالِlong
And they said, "We are more numerous," when we marched forth
And they said we are more when our men gathered
Claiming, "We are more numerous when we march forth,
On the morning of terror, with long spears.
The morning after the fearful night with long spears
On the morning of terror, wielding long spears."

So if they act insolently and boast over us
So if they transgress and boast against us
So if they transgress and boast against us,
About Hamza, while he is in the lofty chambers,
With Hamza while he is in the high chambers
Regarding Hamza, while he dwells in the exalted chambers,

He did slay Utbah on the day of Badr,
Badr has already destroyed Utba one day
[Know that] he had already brought ruin upon 'Utbah on the Day of Badr,
And he showed valor and fought, sparing no effort.
And he has proven himself and struggled without fail
Having fought valiantly and striven without ceasing.
وَقَدand indeed فَلَّلتَyou routed خَيلَهُمُtheir cavalry بِبَدرٍat Badr

And you routed their cavalry at Badr,
You had routed their horses at Badr
And you shattered their cavalry at Badr,
And you pursued the routed host with men.
And chased the fleeing men
And followed up the rout by pursuing their men.
وَقَدand indeed غادَرتَyou left كَبشَهُمُtheir ram (champion) جِهاراًopenly

And you openly left their ram,
And you had left their ram openly
And you left their chieftain lying openly exposed,
Talha, lost in error—praise be to God.
By God’s praise, Talha in misguidance
—Praise be to God—Talha, lost in his misguidance.

Then he fell face down, and you lifted from him
So his face was cut for him and you lifted from him
He was thrown down upon his face, and you raised from him
A fine-edged blade, freshly burnished,
The softness of the cheek, smoothed by the file
A blade of fine edge, freshly honed by the polisher,

It blazes like a lightning flash amidst the shadows.
