Have you not seen that God has favored His Messenger

with the favor of One mighty, possessed of power and bounty,

by bringing the unbelievers to an abode of humiliation?

So they tasted disgrace through captivity and killing.

And God's Messenger's victory had grown strong,

and God's Messenger had been sent with justice.

So he came with a Criterion sent down from God,

its verses clear to those endowed with reason.

So some people believed in it and became certain,

and, praise be to God, they became united.

Others denied it, and their hearts went astray,

so the Lord of the Throne added derangement to their derangement.

And on the day of Badr He gave His Messenger power over them,

and a wrathful band whose deeds were the best of deeds.

In their hands were white blades, light and keen-cutting,

and they had kept them burnished and polished.

So how many a youth of fierce pride they left

slain—and many a valiant middle-aged man among them!

The mourning women's eyes keep vigil over them,

pouring out threads of spray and heavy rain.

Wailing women mourn misguided Utbah and his son,

and Shaybah they mourn, and they mourn Abu Jahl.

And they mourn the bearer of the blood-feud—and Ibn Jud'an is among them—

bereft and burning with grief, their bereavement plain.

A band of them lay in the well of Badr,

men of valor in wars and in drought.

Whoever among them called invoked error, and it answered him,

and error has cords whose connections are severed.

So they came to dwell in the abode of Hell,

kept from oppression and aggression by the most consuming of occupations.
