فَماfor ... not نُوَبُblows الحَوادِثِof misfortune باقياتٌlasting
وَلاand neither البُؤسىmisery تَدومُendures وَلاnor النَعيمُbliss
For the blows of misfortune do not last.
The strokes of fortune last not forever,
The misfortunes of fate are not everlasting,
And neither misery nor bliss endures.
Neither sorrow nor joy endures for long.
Neither misery endures, nor does bliss.
كَماjust as يَمضيpasses سُرورٌjoy وَهوَthough it is جَمُّabundant
كَذَلِكَlikewise ماwhat يَسوؤُكَdistresses you لاnot يَدومُlasts
Just as joy passes, though it is abundant,
As happiness fades swiftly when it comes,
Just as joy departs even when it abounds,
Likewise, what distresses you does not last.
So too your troubles will not last.
So too, that which grieves you does not last.
فَلاso do not تَهلِكperish عَلىover ماwhat فاتَhas passed وَجدَاًfrom grief
وَلاand let not تَفرِدكَisolate you بِالأَسَفِin sorrow الهُمومُworries
So do not perish from grief over what has passed,
Do not destroy yourself with grief for what is gone,
Do not perish in anguish over what has passed,
And let not worries isolate you in sorrow.
Nor let sorrows isolate you with their gloom.
Nor let worries isolate you in regret.
