وَماand not الدَهرُtime وَالأَيّامُand the days إِلّاexcept كَماas تَرىyou see
وَما الدَهرُ وَالأَيّامُ إِلّا كَما تَرى
رَزِيَّةُloss مالٍwealth أَوor فِراقُparting حَبيبِa loved one
رَزِيَّةُ مالٍ أَو فِراقُ حَبيبِ
And time and the days are nothing but what you see:
Time and days are but as you see
Time and the days are nothing but as you see them:
A loss of wealth or parting from a loved one.
The loss of wealth or a loved one's parting.
A loss of wealth or separation from a beloved.
وَإِنَّand indeed اِمرَءاًa man قَدalready جَرَّبَhas experienced الدَهرَtime لَمdid not يَخَفfear
وَإِنَّ اِمرَءاً قَد جَرَّبَ الدَهرَ لَم يَخَف
تَقَلَّبَthe reversal حالَيهِits two states لِغَيرِsurely not لَبيبِwise
تَقَلَّبَ حالَيهِ لِغَيرِ لَبيبِ
And indeed, a man who has experienced time yet has not feared
One who has tasted of time will never dread
And surely, a man who has tested Time does not fear
The reversal of its two states is surely unwise.
The changing of his state however unwise.
The shifting of its states, unlike the unwise.
