لَهفَanguish نَفسيmy soul وَقَليلٍand little ماwhat أُسِرُّI conceal
لَهفَ نَفسي وَقَليلٍ ما أُسِرُّ
ماwhat أَصابَencountered الناسُthe people مِنof خَيرٍgood وَشَرِّand evil
ما أَصابَ الناسُ مِن خَيرٍ وَشَرِّ
Alas for my soul—and little is what I conceal
My soul yearns, though little I reveal
Alas for my soul, and little is what I conceal,
Of what people have encountered of good and evil.
What good and ill to people may befall
Of the good and the evil that has befallen the people.
لَمdid not أَرِدI desire فيin الدَهرِtime يَوماًa single day حَربَهُمwar against them
لَم أَرِد في الدَهرِ يَوماً حَربَهُم
وَهُمُand they الساعونَthose striving فيin الشَرِevil الشِمِرِّfierce
وَهُمُ الساعونَ في الشَرِ الشِمِرِّ
Not once in all time did I desire war against them,
Through time I've never sought to make them kneel
I never sought, throughout time, a single day of war against them,
Yet they are the ones pursuing fierce evil.
Though they in evil deeds stand straight and tall
While they are the ones striving for evil with relentless zeal.
