جفوني وقالوا لا تُقيمن عندنا

فقلتُ نعم لكن على الذُّلّ والخسف

فقلتُ نعم لكن على الذُّلّ والخسف

They shunned me and said, “Do not stay among us.”

They spurned me and said, “Do not stay with us.”

I replied, “Yes—but amid humiliation and abasement.”

So I said, “Yes, but in humiliation and abasement.”

وقالوا كثيرا ما حلمناك عندنا

فقلت نعم لكن على ذلك الرّدف

فقلت نعم لكن على ذلك الرّدف

They said, “Many a time we put up with you among us.”

And they said, “We have often dreamed of you here with us.”

I replied, “Yes—but for the sake of that rump.”

So I said, “Yes, but on that rump.”
