The bough withers at the sway of your figure,
The branch withers from the glances of your eyes
and the sun blushes before the planes of your cheek.
And the sun is ashamed before the radiance of your cheeks
والدُّرّand pearls مهماwhenever افترّparts ثغرُكyour mouth باسماsmiling

أضحتbecame فرائدهُits choicest pearls تُهانare scorned وتُبذلُand freely given away
And pearls, whenever your mouth parts in a smile,
However much your lips pretend, pearls
have their choicest pearls scorned and squandered.
Become worthless and degraded beside them
وإذاand when شدوتyou sing فكلُّthen every شادsinger أخرسis mute
وإذاand when رنوتyou gaze فكلُّthen every ظبيgazelle أحولُis cross-eyed
And when you sing, every singer is mute,
When you are silent, all poets are muted
and when you gaze, every gazelle is cross-eyed.
When you sing, all gazelles are enchanted
ومدامُand the wine of ريقكyour saliva لوif أبيحwere permitted لماthen no غدتwould remain

And if the wine of your saliva were permitted,
If your saliva were made public, it would make
no other wine would remain to permeate minds.
All minds intoxicated and enthralled
وسوادُand the blackness of فرعكyour hair لوif صبغتyou dyed بهwith it الدّجىthe darkness

And if you dyed the dark with the blackness of your hair,
If the blackness of your hair were used as ink
the night's dye would never fade at all.
The dye of night would never be extracted

Or do you not see the lover's night, with its hue,
Or don't you see that the night of lovers with its dye
never changing from that shade?
Does not change from the state of that dye

And if you lent the wasting sickness of your slender waist
Your waist, if revealed from its clothes
to the moon of night, it would never wax full.
The crescent moon would never again be full

Or have you not lent the lovelorn some of it? He has never ceased
Or it was never revealed, so it remains
wasting away in repayment of that loan.
Dissolving from that revealing

And if you shot the arrows of your glance to drive estrangement
The glances of your eyes, if cast in disdain
from one in love, that would spell death for the lovelorn.
Would kill the lover with a mortal blow

O you who, through overwhelming longing, have set my tears free,
Oh you who in intense passion made me shed tears
while patience lies chained in the prison of rejection.
While patience remains chained in the prison of rejection

And I barred my eye from drinking at its springs,
I have forbidden my eyes from beholding him
and opened them to sleeplessness, which drinks deep from them.
And left them for the wakeful to draw from

And I left my body a dwelling for ailments,
I have left my body as a dwelling for illnesses
and heaped upon my heart what cannot be borne.
And carried above my heart that which cannot be borne

Restore sleep to my wounded eyelid,
I return wakefulness to my eyelids
so perhaps it may be enfolded by the vision of your phantom.
Perhaps in the image of your phantom it will be wrapped

أنthat العواذلُthe reproaching women نصحهاtheir counsel لاnot يُقبلُis accepted
O you who blame me for loving him, unaware
Oh you who blame his passion without knowing
that the reproaching women's counsel goes unheeded:
That advice to the passionately in love is never accepted

So if you are blind to your own beauty, then your words—
If blindness to your beauty has befallen me, say
the gate of my hearing is locked against them.
The doors of hearing for you are closed

How can I forget life, when love for him
How can I abstain from life and his love
is sweeter to me than life, and more beautiful?
When his love is more delicious to me than life itself

Can one wounded at heart be blamed for loving a fawn
The censured, love-sick, self-blaming
whose brow is crowned with beauty's diadem?
His brow is crowned with the crown of beauty

A moon who, in his beauty, lords it over the fair,
A moon wandering astray in his beauty
and with his coy charm plays the darling even before kings.
Lording over kings with his clothes
