Sfax—you see no distinguished man in it
Safaqis, you see in it no eminent men,
who offers you sincere affection from among its people.
Your friends of distinction have left it clean,

I have lost its most illustrious leading men.
Of its great ones I have lost the most noble,
They lie buried, and the rabble remain in it.
While only its riffraff of people remain,

And leading men have said, 'We still remain.'
And its great ones have said: 'We have survived,'
I said, 'Yes—the greatest of its criminals.'
I said: 'Yes, the great ones - great criminals.'
