unjustly; and the falcon swooped upon the crow.

O parting, you have overwhelmed my endurance in love,

and tears bear witness to your power to overwhelm.

How many a night we spent on beds of bliss,

in union, between harmony and discord.

    And his sips and glances were my wine;

Love decreed it lawful for us.

Time knows nothing of what was settled between us,

as a dullard knows nothing of obscure riddles.

Then those nights ended, just as

a dream-vision came and passed in haste.

I shall surely endure time and its decree,

for perhaps my patience will be rewarded with kindness,

and days of joy return, as though the folding of

Time's robe were wondrous embroidery for them.

If he sings aloud on the night of our union,

he makes a mockery of al-Mawsili and Maʿbad.

Distinct in beauty from his peers,

and outstanding among humankind for his well-proportioned form.

O possessor of my heart and master of my lifeblood,

to me, union with you is no passing thing.

Promise me union, even if you delay, for I find

contentment in your postponement instead of fulfillment.
