لأهل زماننا بالبخل فخرٌ

كما افتخرت بنائلها الأوائل

Our contemporaries take pride in meanness,

Just as the ancients took pride in generosity.

فعن وصف الفضائل كلّ حين

لهم شُغلٌ بأوصاف الرّذائل

They are always busy describing vices,

With no time for praising virtues.
