يا من تملّك في هواهُ بحسنه

يا من تملّك في هواهُ بحسنه

وبغى وجرّد للقتال بواتر

وبغى وجرّد للقتال بواتر

O you who, through your beauty, have become sovereign in the love you inspire,

O you who with your beauty reigns supreme,

And have tyrannized and unsheathed keen-edged swords for battle.

And with might and prowess girds for war and fight,

ينهى ويأمر في هواهُ بما يشا

ينهى ويأمر في هواهُ بما يشا

لا مانعٌ لأجلّ ما هو آمر

لا مانعٌ لأجلّ ما هو آمر

He forbids and commands in the love he inspires, as he wishes;

Commands and forbids in your love as you please,

There is no hindrance to the greatest of his commands.

None can prevent what you order outright,

فكأنّما هو في زواجر أمره

فكأنّما هو في زواجر أمره

ملكٌ على دست الخلافة قاهر

ملكٌ على دست الخلافة قاهر

Thus it is as though, in the stern prohibitions of his command,

As though with your prohibitions you were king,

He were a mighty king upon the throne of the caliphate.

An overlord with absolute power and might,

ارحم صدي كبد أضرّ بها الأسى

ارحم صدي كبد أضرّ بها الأسى

من طيب مورد فيك إذ هو عاطر

من طيب مورد فيك إذ هو عاطر

Have mercy on the thirst of a liver afflicted by sorrow,

Have mercy on a bosom torn by sorrow,

With the sweetness of your mouth’s wellspring, for it is fragrant.

Seeking comfort in your sweet, scented site,

والله إنّي في هواك موحّد

والله إنّي في هواك موحّد

بالحسن ما أنا مشركٌ أو كافر

بالحسن ما أنا مشركٌ أو كافر

By God, in loving you I am a monotheist,

By God, in love of you I'm monotheist,

In beauty: I am neither a polytheist nor an unbeliever.

Loving your beauty, no idolater in sight.
